while I don't agree with the message , it may be beneficial to the younger posters.

Actually I did click on one of them and was reading about some stuff. Advertising half price stuff in dollars and then having to pay a small fortune to ship it over here is useless to me, but stuff that contains decent information is fair enough!

If that would give you much more money than now, I'd click on the ads. Just assure me...

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but i for one, don't visit this site, so that you make money. i visit the site because i'm interested in it. if you happen to make money also, so much the better.

and very rarely does an ad interest me enough that i'll click on it. though it DOES occasionally happen.

OH, by the way mark. . i've stopped using proximitron, since the e-bay **** is gone now.

It sounds to me as if the money earned from the ads, is needed to keep the site afloat, so that you and I are actually able to visit it. And to me, it sounds only reasonable that I click an ad every now and then (even if I'm not that interested in it) to assist in this goal, which also benefits me, after all.

Hey--that Lycos ad isn't just a banner ad, it's an honest-to-goodness search engine!

I clicked it expecting to be taken to the Lycos site, but got to do a search (which took me to the site) instead.

                  Very cool.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

What would happen if I click on the ads, and close them soon? You'd be very rich then, right?

                        No, Slover.

That said, Markos and I are not rich in any monetary sense as a result from ads being displayed on Apolyton, but they are paying the server bills which is what is important.

If Markos and I had operated ACS such that we intended to make money from it, I do believe it would have been shut down long ago...

                          Dan,
As I want Apolyton to exist, I can easily click on the ads, and when they load, I close them. Thus, assuming I open at least 15 ads each day, it would improve the position of Apolyton, right? And that's what I want to do. I'm interested about how exactly Apolyton earns - by number of clicks, or how?
And - do you and Markos get money in your pocket from Apolyton, at least 100$, or not?
Edit: watch out, I'm not Slover, as you write .

we have all kinds of ads

                            - paying per impression(when the banner is shown, example: ugo ads)
                            - paying per click(when the banner is clicked, example: lycos, hotbot)
                            - paying on purchases(when the banner is clicked and a purchase is made, example: chips&bits)

in all cases, clicking helps one way or the other, directly or indirectly...

on the other question: 100$ for how long? 1 month, 3 months?

                              Solver:

Our exact financial status is a most personal matter and will not be disclosed. I don't mean for this to come across as being rude, but it's not really any of your business. That said, and curse me for my attitude if you feel you must, rest assured that there is enough revenue being generated by our online advertising to pay the server costs.

                              If and when we do actually see any kind of revenue, it is always nominal in amount and goes to pay additional costs incurred (e.g. bulletin board scripts, domains etc.). We are not "making" any money that we are able to use in other capacities -- we do not earn any disposable income, just enough to pay all our creditors. {grin}

In the end, this is all we could have hoped for when Apolyton began, and indeed since we began webmastering fan sites for the Civ community; in the case of the former, this is they way it has always been.
