  • WANTED: Website testers/administrators

I'm currently working on a new maps-only Civ2 website, which will not be an update to, but rather a replacement of my current website (<A href="http://gene.wins.uva.nl/~jvermeir/civ2">Mercator's Civilization2 Site</A>). I've been working on it since September last year or so, and I probably will be working on it for a few more months.

What I am looking for is people who can help me in updating it (finding and posting Civ and cartographic related news-items for instance), and managing it (mainly someone to maintain the database, add/receive new entries and such; but also people to write civ2/cartography/geography/history related columns/articles). You'll need to be available for a few months at least. I won't be expecting you to do much more than myself, which is perhaps a few hours every week. Knowledge of HTML and JavaScript could come in handy, but is not necessary at all. It would be a big help if you're interested in geography and cartography (which the site will cover a bit too), besides Civ2 (and Civ3 probably, in a while) of course.

Beside that, I'm looking a small but representative and dedicated group of potential visitors to test my site. That means, see if all browsers/platforms are properly supported, test if the site isn't too slow, give me some advice/feedback on its layout and contents.

Do you think you could fit in any of the above mentioned positions? Or do you have any further questions? Please contact me!!

And as a little side note, for the less devoted webmasters among you, is there any interest in such a site at all??? I'll be making the site anyway , but I'm just interested in what I can expect. Also, I might not need as many helpers if I'm the only one visiting it .

    Ok.

About the other things, I can do them. But not on regular basis at all.

Well, since I'm dabbling with HTML myself I have IE 5.5, NS 4.something, Mozilla 0.8 and Opera installed. Let me know when you put up the new site and I will check it out for you...

I first intended to keep my site "secret" as long as possible, but what the heck, here's a link to what should become this new site: http://gene.wins.uva.nl/~jvermeir/civ2mm
There are hardly any contents so far, but there are several parts that need special attention.
        - The map database has a left-side navigation frame. Do the links to the entries work (Only the map utilities and the africa and asia real-world maps are available, hardly any are actually downloadable yet)? Is it slow?
        - The map database also has a search frame (at bottom), does that work (only the above mentioned items can be searched for)?
        - Is the general layout OK (mainly readability and correct support of CSS, but also comments on the site in general)?

I have tested the site on Windows98: MSIE 4.0 and 5.0, Netscape 4.5 and 5.0, and Opera 5.02, and on UNIX: Netscape 4.75 @ screen resolutions of 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768. So I guess most browsers in use are supported. Apart from that, NedStat has added functionality, so I can get stats on what browsers my visitors use.
The only thing beside that, that's worth "testing" is what kind of modems people have these days, and if the site isn't too slow. But this will, I hope, not be an issue until the entire database (some 500 entries for now) has been added.

Just post all your comments in here.

I think that the links on the first page should be more noticeable(if there is such word. ).

Don't they highlight? But I see your point, at home they look perfectly clear, but at university I can hardly read the non-highlighted ones. Increasing the lightness of your monitor just a tad can do miracles, though.

Oh, by the way, what font do you see the titles in (e.g. the "CivilizationII" and "Cartography" titles on the Links page? Do they look like the main titles (as in the images at the very top of each page)?

No. They look like the usual boring fonts.

                  Nope, just the ordinary font.

And maybe you should make the graphic links on top of every page more clear with text or at least alt-texts because it is not clear what they link to...

The site looks great BTW, good job.
