    LoD...
It fell into the spam thread category and the flame/hate thread category. Since you asked me to read, I will ask you the same. Back on the first page I posted:
"When I first saw the thread, I left it alone. I didn't act until after a few posts showed which way the thread was heading"
Based on what I had seen already, it was quite obvious which way the thread was headed...

So, that should answer your question

It would be great if moderation wasn't needed. But, as proven over and over again... it is needed.

      <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

This reminds of the parable of the auditors. Most business people hate auditors. Why? Because they HAVE to find mistakes in the accounts to justify their existence - to show they are "needed". So they go around nitpicking and always expanding the list of things that they consider faults in accounts.

Mods are just like this. If you had a look at the list of forbidden things before we had mods it was tiny. Now it gets longer every week.

      Lighten up!

I think this thread has gone long enough.

I have neither the time, energy, inclination or liturgical knowledge to attempt such a bizarre misdirection.
I believe I told Horse that I MIGHT be Civwhacko to see if he ran with it...of course he did.

Unfortunately for sane and thinking people--if he's a DL, he's not mine. We may be faced with the possibility that this is indeed a real and deeply disturbed individual.

I don't even bother to read those threads, let alone create them. Sorry, Horse, fooled again.

No problem with a private site having rules and very glad that this one does.

Also consider the test "anyone should be able to come here" to be a good one.

But I find it hard to understand your comment in the ACOL thread, Ming.

You are very well placed to guess how a thread here will develop. But if you act on that guess too readily by deleting threads which raise a challenging topic you will dumm down the discussion which takes place. No surprise, then, if a lot of spam and juvenile banter becomes the staple. Judging by your ACOL comment that is not something to which you wish to contribute.

I do not get to see the stuff you delete and, specifically, did not see the first few posts made to EVC's thread. So if you have to take out much that is seriously objectionable then please continue to be cautious. But your responses suggest that in this case the first few posts were merely a bit rubbishy. In that case I, simply as one poster who values Mark and Dan's excellent games players' site and the good humoured and painstaking moderation which contributes to its excellence, request that you stay your hand the next time - at least until a couple of the visitors invited over the threshold who might, if afforded the opportunity, make a thoughtful contribution, get the chance to do so.

And for EVC. Sexual attraction is truly mysterious. The exact feature which first attracts you to a woman can turn out to be the thing which eventually kills the attraction dead. And an outright blemish can, with time, intimacy and affection, come to be a huge turn on. If you had to pick one single aspect of human relations in which broad categorisation will always and inevitably give way to individual appreciation it would have to be sex.

East Street Trader... I hear you!
                        But...
I think people don't understand the simple fact that I'am NOT online 24/7. Yes, I'm online a bunch, but many times, I'm only checking in to see what's happening, and may not be available to check back in for a long period of time after that. As I stated before, I did see the thread, and let it stay at first. Yes, I was monitoring every post that was made to it, because I did expect the worst.
After seeing the "early results", I then deleted the thread. If I had had more time to stick around, I would have probably given it a little more time before pulling the plug(and that assumes that the trend of spam and hate would continue) ... but thinking I wasn't going to be able to check in for a long period, I had to make a decision. And I did.
And I have no problem with the decision I made. There was enough evidence to delete the thread already.

There have been some situations where I have made a different decision in the same situation... and I got burned by not removing it.

So again, (as usual), you are welcome to your opinion.
I will continue doing the job I have been tasked with.
And people will continue to disagree with my actions.

                        That's life

I guess I would prefer to see a thread being closed instead of deleted.

Then again, I don't really care either way

                              This is pure BS!

Someone starts a serious thread, two idiots spam on it, and the threadstarter, and those who want a serious discussion get punished.

                              PUNISH THE FVCKING SPAMMERS!!!

I would favour post-count reductions to spammers- no banning right away, but just knock of a couple hundred posts.

Finally, I reiterate, close the thread, don't delete it.

Same goes for duplicate threads- a quick note as to where the discussion should be going on , and then close the thread. (No need even to take the time to put in a link)

Ming, I think your judgement in moderating this site is very good. But I object to deleting threads in general, and especially to deleting serious threads because others spam them.

I guess we will continue to agree to disagree on deleting threads. By just closing them, they still continue to contribute to the clutter of the site.
In addition, if they are flame/hate posts... it is better to delete them before they offend more people.
