• Ming: Election Threads in the OTF

I don't understand why you start closing election threads in the OTF. Yes, there are quite a number of them, but consider two things:

1. This is a once every four years event.
2. It is one of the most, if not the most, US Presidential elections.

These two conditions combined to create the large number of threads. I don't think people should complain about this, and if they do, I don't see why you need to close these threads. These threads don't violate the rules. If a large number of people are interested in this election, why can't there be a large number of threads?

agreed.

I'm just glad mine wasn't closed

I think if it isn't a copycat thread (IE there is already a discussion about the same thing), not offensive, and the person isn't warned by the moderators- in other words following the rules in the FAQ; then the thread should be acceptable. Why can't I post my 1 thread for 8 hours for anything I want as long as it follows the rules in the FAQ?

anyway that was my argument, my thread wasn't deleted, so I guess it worked

MANY... MANY... MANY... MANY... people have complained about the number of elections threads. And I have to agree. Yes it is an important event and happens only once every four years, but it was getting our of hand.

Even now, if you look at the OTF, the number of threads is unbelievable.

And this is after I have deleted over 50 threads (I've lost count)on the subject to try to keep it under control.
I have been deleting the threads with these simple guidelines...

Copy cat threads... If a specific subject is already being covered, I just delete any new thread.

Complaints threads on the number of election threads...
there have over 20 threads on this subject, all of which just add to the problem.

Stupid election threads... Senseless or non understandable threads on the subject

You suck threads... Threads where the entire message is "fill in the blank" sucks.

And any other thread that doesn't seem to add anything really new on the subject.

Now, some threads that have fallen in the above categories have survived. If a thread reaches a high enough post count, and has rational/meaningful discussion in it, I see no reason to delete it.

Also, I'm not perfect and I'm just using my opinion, so I'm sure people may disagree with any given thread being deleted... especially when it's "their" thread.
Also, I do make mistakes.

However, without these actions, 90% of the first page of the OTF would be filled with election threads... with most of them being repetive or just plain stupid.

And besides this post, I will not be answering specific questions on specific threads unless I have the time to. (I do have a life)

So, just look at the threads that are already there, and ask yourself if you are just duplicating a current thread, or if you thread really ads anything.
Remember... think before you post

Back to work!

Looks like the most important word is left out!

Ming's said all that needs to be said. Since the initial fever on election night, I have turned off and am a bit put off by the duplicated threads. Just look at the current OT page and see how many of them there are.

Either way I look at it, I have to agree with Ming on this. Too many meaningless threads on basically the same subject, and two wellknown words come to mind: Case closed. Thanks for cleaning up the mess.

Now for an attempted name change.

Oops, that makes it the most important words

Yeah, but your Eurocrap doesn't necessarily affect the functioning and stability of the world as much as which mediocre clown ends up as US President, and what he decides to do to prove himself.

Unless the thread is truly devoid of value, it shouldn't be deleted. This is a once or twice in 200+ year event - if you want to go back to Rutherfraud B. Hayes in 1876, and Andy Jackson four decades before that, if you can even count them in the same category.
