I respectfully disagree with those who object to making the thread sticky. There are several people who, although they would probably be interested in the thread, have never even looked at it. Until recently, I was one of them. When the thread is sticky, these people start to wonder what is so special about the thread. They look at it, and find that they are interested.

For those who have no interest in the thread, there is a simple solution: Look at it once to see if you are interested, then never look at it again. If everyone looks at the thread just once, those who are interested can help, and those who are not need never think about it again.

Amen to that. I too have mixed feelings about the whole concept of using a site like Apolyton for drawn out charity appeals, however worthy they are. Charity is a personal matter for the donator, not a public one

The only thing worth reading in this thread is this original comment by legman - it is a good point -
<img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>i'm an idiot so you'll have to explain it to me

      1) AH says that people were forced to donate by a top-ed thread
-- perhaps then all those special "marathons" should be banned

      2) Legman agrees, and says that making an appeal for charity on site like Apolyton creates "mixed feelings" to him
-- perhaps then we should put a box for money to the related person outside her current location, and then let people from around the world find it and donate...
perhaps we should not make public appeals to people's sensitivism over a certain level cause we remind them how they should act....

      3) Legman then says that charity is a personal matter.
-- how is that connected with an thread on a internet site? one could easily message Lancer privately and not publicize his donation

so, please explain me how this is a valid point....

If I could just try to cut through all the cr#p here for just one second. To me, having this thread stuck to the top of the OT is an irritation and inappropriate. Its akin to cyber panhandling. Do I mind if people participate in this thing Lancer and Narck have going? No. Do I think we should all have it in our face all day long? No.

As for a lot of the other silly and emotional comments on this thread, all I'll say is if this thing is legit, you should practice what you preach here as well as with the family you are trying to help.

LOL, I love the way people defending the sticky thread have turned the complaint about it into some sort of attack on motherhood, wheeling out the impoverished family when it suits them to blacken the reputation of those who have simply objected to it being stuck at the top of the forum.

Some of the attacks on Legman by the self styled "charity workers" have been quite viscious and hardly bring credit on their project. It makes you wonder what they are really about Their charity certainly doesn't seem to extend to their fellow posters

Is AH saying he's getting psycological abuse from his relatives and needs us to build him a house?

              Whatever...

Mark, Narck, friends who have spoken up for the Karen Mills threads, besides getting a couple candidates for the next 'Apolyton Whiner' this thread is not worth the electrons needed to keep it around. Thanks for supporting our effort, and for the deep feelings shown here. I think Karen has some really good people devotedly on her side.

That's the silver lining on this cloud.

Obviously, since Mark and/or Dan are the only ones who can make it sticky, it had already been officially condoned. The way it looks to me is that you were just trying to create a stir. Well congratulations AH, mission accomplished, I hope you're happy.

I am here to make sure the main goal is reached (you know, Karen Mills having a roof over her head), that's what's important. What's not that important is to be friendly to a few people who IMO seem to be too selfish to allow 1 small thread in 1 forum to be sticky. That smells like selfishness and I don't like that.

There you go again Lancer. Can we dispense with the emotional blackmail, character assasination and other clap trap and stick to cases? My initial post made crystal clear that I am not making a judgement on the merits of the no doubt heart warming to some Karen Mills appeal. My objection is to a sticky thread being at the top of OT forum.

I would have complained whatever the topic of the sticky thread. The fact that it was the Karen Mills thread is incidental to my complaint, it is neither here nor there, so most of the comments on this thread to date are irrelevant. Can you just step back, take a few deep breaths and get your mind around that? Then reply if you have something relevant to say.

having a dozen sticky charity threads would definitely be annoying, just like having twenty coffeeshop threads would be. one thread, on the other hand... and it's *easier* to avoid looking at when it's sticky. just put a thin piece of masking tape over your screen in the appropriate spot. ^_^ if your objection is someone getting special treatment for their thread, i suppose anyone is able to petition markg for similar treatment.

almost any other charity you could mention is already well-known enough that exposure on apolyton would be of insignificant benefit, or else you wouldn't trust the thread author with your money. so i don't foresee this sort of appeal for money happening much on the ot other than in karen-related stuff.

AH, if you really wish to dispense with the character assasination then you really should just stop posting. You are your own character assasin.

                      "To some" AH?

I don't really have to add anything to that AH. You show to the world who you are.

Anyway, I'm not wasting another moment of my time on you. Narck, might I suggest forgetting this? They won't answer your questions anyway. Forget them my friend. They're not worth your time.

Its no substitute for arguments Lancer. Just makes you look bad

Ahhhhhhh... I'm getting tired of this...

You guys can complain all you want to, for all I care, since it's quite obvious to me that it won't make any difference. Therefore this whole debate is fruitless to begin with.

And for that reason I'm not going to go into this matter again
