Please Markos, for the sake of what is good and holy, do not do this.

    1. There are many people who frequent the OT forum who do not visit the other forums - and in many cases, the entire site. This would only get those people pissed at you. They'd spread the word, and eventually the entire set of forums would die, because whether you want to admit it or not, the OT is a vital lifeblood to the ACS forums.
    2. As Murgatroyd said, this would only result in an increase in off-topic posting on the on-topic forums. I know you don't want to deal with that.
    3. The eight-hour limit on starting topics is enough of a constraint on the OT already. This will only make things worse.

I say again: for the sake of what's good and holy, DO NOT DO THIS. You'll only bring yourself more trouble, and it WOULD be the eventual downfall of these forums. The spammers aren't THAT bad of a threat; let them have A LITTLE fun, and they'll be satisfied. Trust me on this one.

EDIT: So THIS is what Markos' test thread on the OT Monday night was all about...

I agree with others, if people are not allowed to raise post count in the off topic, they will consequently spam the on-topic forums.

This reminds me a little of a parallel to the petrol taxing in this country, keep adding on a little at a time, until crunch point...people stick no more of it. Why bother? It is just a bit of a laugh and brings a bit of cameradery to the OT. This is silly, and quite frankly, unnecessary! I thought it was a bug, I thought that the admins would have warned us first, or mentioned it in some form or other...again I am disappointed...

Can this new *feature* be turned on per user? Maybe a nice new tool to be used along with post count reduction and banning.

Mark, Dan, you must have put a lot of work into this, but I think you should modify it to only not count posts that are shorted then 2 or 3 lines.

                <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

                NO!!!

and Mark, if you make it permanent it will kill the OT...

Godammit this is ridiculous. Why not just disable the whole post count system while you are at it for all the difference it makes! I object, this is stupid!!!

You people. It's like post counts are your life. Posts counts are Maos life. You want to be like Mao?!

You are who you are here by what you post, how long you've been here and how you interact with others.

I'm not picking on Mao. I only use his name as examples because he posted 10,0000 times in under a year, and post counts are what we're talking about here. But still, he's not really an Apolyton vet to me. Maybe in a few years.

Well, yes, we COULD manage even with this one, but much worse. Bad idea, MarkG. Instead of adding code like this, you could use up your time, for example, to update your homepage. I like the graphics. I could even send the link to http://www.digitalblasphemy.com

if the titles should mean something, they should be related with the actual nature of these forums

anyway, yes, the idea is wrong cause it's a generalization. while i still believe that the on-topic posts have much more usefull content that the off-topics ones(which is why off-topic posts are deleted by the thousands and nearly all on-topic ones are archived), such a measure would be unfair to some people and the posts they make in the OT...
beyond that, it's disapointing to see the fear behind the jokes around the posibility of never reaching emperor status by silly posting in the OT...
