I'd like to thank Markos for attempting to address the issue. I for one have been *****ing about the spam for awhile.

I'm sure the post count does bring many people to the site but sadly it brings people with little or nothing to add to a conversation, forum or site. They litter each and every thread with their little piece of graffiti.

I have no problem with the 1 thread per 8 hour rule and think it had an effect.

I am still unclear on what the current change is however. Are some postcounts and all titles frozen? And only in OT?

I say keep your Civ feel by using the post count and titles but give the mods free reign to weed out the compulsive spammers.

It's a terrible idea! Post counts do matter! Sure it may sound silly to some of you, but you just can't understand, you have a different way of thinking about it. I take pride in my post count, knowing that each and everyone was legit and non-spam. I was devestated when the merger occured, eliminating 1000+ posts I had made!
      PLUS
The whole spam thing is a non-issue. There is hardly any spam imo. The vast majority of what I see in OT is legit conversation. This is making a mountain out of a mole-hill.

Haven't you been telling us all along that titles and post counts are meaningless? Why the sudden change?
<img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>of course i have been saying that titles and post counts are meaningless, and i'm still saying it, since we may have some Kings or Princes who "achieved" that by 100% off-topic posting! if only on-topic posts counted, then, yes, i believe that a big post count would mean something, and it would be good

I agree with Murgatroyd...it reeks of hypocrisy does this. It reeks of hypocrisy I say!

              ROTFLMAO !!!

Markos, that was a missed chance, had you done this on April 1st, you would have had the best April Fools joke ever But even now it was (to me) probably the one of the funniest things in Apolyton History, you really had some of those master spammers worried there!

But I must agree with the people who are against installing this permanently, we're already having our hands full on AH, Bkeela and DarthVeda on the CtP(II) forums as it is

Oh boy, I'm still laughing and I first read about this half an hour ago

I believe we should keep the OT thread topic posts because some of the spammers could just post on other topics, i.e. (Civ III) with their spam...

Also there are some intelligent threads in OT.

P.S. I realize this may be overly complicated to do, but do you know how to delete certain posts. If so that may work better than deleting threads or locking them or making posts in OT not count.

                  The feeling of pride???

Will that pride not be enhanced by knowing that you achieved your rank with no spamming, but with opinionated views?

                    What an excellent idea, MarkG.

However, to avoid the other forums being spammed by post-count chasers, you should disable the post count increments on those forums as well. Surely, those interested in Civ, CtP and SMAC are there to interchange information not to bump their post counts.

I say get rid of the post counts altogether and we will all live happily ever after (at least I will).

As I've constantly been in favor of, disable the post count! Who needs it?

I have just read through this thead again. MarkG should not give in to blackmail. He has made a sensible (IMHO) proposal which maybe doesn't go far enough.

What is the response from some quarters - give us back our post count increments or we will spam your other forums. In my book, one does not back down against threats like this - MarkG disable the whole postcount thing, it has run it's course.

Let people be judged by the quality of posts not the quantity.

I agree that post count and titles should be abolished, but in the vote last year the majority voted for the current system, so I doubt that it will be changed.

Blackmail?!? The warnings about other forums were not threats. They were simply noting that those who spam to increase their post counts would not be stopped by this restriction, and that (reason indicates) they would probably make many posts in other forums. In many cases, the "large post count" mentality does not include long, well thought-out posts, so the inevitable result of this restriction would be a decline in the quality of the on-topic forums. The restriction would therefore be counterproductive.

I think Murg's fears are coming true. The average qualities in some of the On-Topic forums has gone down in the past few days. Spammers have resorted to making short posts that don't contribute to the thread in some of the on-topic forums.

I'm not concerned about my post count, just the quality of posts outside of the OTF.
