For what is worth, I am with you on this one, Calamaro. Now I need you to help me explain the people that, just like fora, "data" is a plural and therefore to say "data is" is incorrect. Deal?

Sure. I learned that datum a long time ago.
Maybe you can help me with this one...is viruses supposed to be viri? I would say yes if it's second declension Latin, but I'm not sure if it's 4th declension or what?

I can understand 'forum' being Latin, but I'm not too sure that 'data' and 'virus' are...

Datum - neuter form of datus (latin)
virus - latin means venom (no I'm not sure which declension)

All right you rambunctious Latinizing Calamari.

My Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary has the preferred plural as forums. Although it says "also fora".

So I guess it's OK for you to use the second best plural if that satisfies you. I will of course be sticking to the standard form.

Well - if my schoolboy Latin is up to De Bello Gallico - it appears to be Second Declension hence viri - see the references here.

Post script[um] added in edit - I begin to think that my schoolboy Latin is better than the search engine - Unless I am mistaken most of the references contained in the list I gathered are forms of vir (man) not virus (venom) - any decent Latin scholars out there??

Why did Huey cut off in mid sentence?

And secondly - Latin is a language on life support, and Chinese wants to pull the plug, to meet the place in the sky where dead languages like Sanskirt and Babylonian are...

                      Tovarisch,
I don't know, maybe Huey will enlighten us.
On the other point if the roots of half of our language were Sanskrit or Babylonian the languages would not be as dead as they are. OK Latin is a language on life-support, but still a valuable resource - it will be a sad day when 'schoolboy Latin' is no more and the language truly lives only in the minds and books of dedicated scholars.
