Yes, take a look at who suggested it the first time I'm truly a veteran Too bad about to low post count. Anyway, I think my signature quote should get in there.

      ------------------
If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon
      in a perfectly useless manner,
you have learned how to live.
      - Lin Yutang
Lo there do I see my father
Lo there do I see my mother
and my sisters and my brothers
Lo there do I see the line of my people
      back to the begining
Lo they do call to me
They bid me take my place among them
      in the Halls of Valhalla
where the brave may live forever

I can't remember whose quote this is, maybe Martin something:
          <center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:

Coug's sig quote is one of the most Civilized I've ever seen.

actually, shakespeare is related due to the wonder

In that case, we have a barrage of quotes to choose from! You could start with some SMAC quotes. If it is possible to have different quotes at different forums, it would be great to read a SMAC quote every time I post to Apolyton section. But because it probably isn't possible with the current system, you could use some of the most Civish quotes, eg:
          <center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:
          <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1>

          - Aristotle
          Nichomachean ethics

<img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>I really don't know what impresses me in this one.

          <center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:
          <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1>

'Abort, Retry, Fail?' was the phrase some wormdog scrawled next to the door of the Edit Universe project room. And when the new dataspinners started working, fabricating their worlds in the huge comp systems, we'd remind them: If you see this message, always choose 'retry'.

          -Bad'l Ron, Wakener,
          Morgan polysoft

          <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>
(Not only in Civ, but always when using computers...)

          <center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:

Also, SMAC has some good Sun Tzu / Spartan quotes about war. Quote Chinese people as much as you can.

            Some quotes by George Orwell:
            • In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
            • You have to be an intellectual to believe such nonsense. No ordinary man could be such a fool.
            • Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
            • We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.
            • On the whole, human beings want to be good -- but not too good and not quite all the time.
            • The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.
            • It may be just as possible to breed a race of men with no desire for liberty as it would be to create a species of hornless cow.

You can use them all except from the first that belongs to my sig. (I love this grin )

Hey, i just happened to add a new quote to my sig. .

                ------------------
"At the crossroads of the choice between 'I Know' and 'They say,' [the mystic] chose the authority of others, he chose to submit rather than to understand, to believe rather than to think." -John Galt in Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

This is a misquote, it's He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.

As for quotes, please let's not do political ones or blatantly ideological ones, like Bill3K's suggestion. A few of my own, courtesy of the greatest comic strip of all time:

The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure pure reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!

Well, it just seemed wrong to cheat on an ethics test.

Some people are pragmatists, taking things as they come and making the best of the choices available. Some people are idealists, standing for principle and refusing to compromise. And some people just act on any whim that enters their heads. I pragmatically turn my whims into principles!

Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

If something is so complicated that you can't explain it in 10 seconds, then it's probably not worth knowing anyway.

I imagine bugs and girls have a dim perception that nature played a cruel trick on them, but they lack the intelligence to really comprehend the magnitude of it.

And these are just a FEW of the gems. The strip is, of course, Calvin & Hobbes.

Oh, and another good Billy quotes (I'd be happy with nothing but Shakespeare quotes as well, we could do 'em for a year, easily):

                  Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
                  Signifying nothing.
-Macbeth, Act V, Scene V, Macebeth

And oh yes, check out http://www.MightyCool.com/quote/ to sign up for some actually pretty good quotes sent to your mailbox each day. If you want more Billy quotes you can search at http://www.cs.usyd.edu.au/~matty/Sha...re/nsearch.cgi for the exact references and stuff.

Hmph. I see that the Magellan quote made it in. Let me again repeat that I for one wouldn't like to see ideological quotes in there- I mean, it's not that I'm religious that I'm objecting- I agree that the Church was wrong back then too- I just don't think we should be seeing quotes that will be distasteful to some in the list. I would have made the same comment if it had been a pro-religion quote. (not that I think that anything having anything to do with religion or politics should be out of course, but there's plenty of other valid quotes that aren't involved either. There are tons of great Bible quotes that are universal, as there are tons of great, say, Carl Sagan quotes that are also universal).

                        Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
                        You that hide behind walls
                        You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

                        You that never done nothin'
                        But build to destroy
                        You play with my world
                        Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
                        When the fast bullets fly

                        Like Judas of old
                        You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
                        You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
                        That runs down my drain

                        You fasten the triggers
                        For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
                        You hide in your mansion
                        As young people's blood
                        Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

                        You've thrown the worst fear
                        That can ever be hurled
                        Fear to bring children
                        Into the world
                        For threatening my baby
                        Unborn and unnamed
                        You ain't worth the blood
                        That runs in your veins

                        How much do I know
                        To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
                        You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
                        Though I'm younger than you
                        Even Jesus would never
                        Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
                        Is your money that good
                        Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
                        I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
                        All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
                        And your death'll come soon
                        I will follow your casket
                        In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
                        Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

                        - Bob Dylan Masters of War

Any verse would be enough and I think you could justify tying any of them to Civ.
"Clearly I'm missing the thread some of where the NFL actually is." - Ben Kenobi on his NFL knowledge
