To me, the problem isn't so much the ad, but the hypocrisy. For some reason you guys running the show take the extra steps to censor profanity and delete and threads with sexual connotation, but have no problems showing ads with half naked women.

quote:

an additional note: a user survey last summer showed that the BIG majority of your visitors are adults, while the percentage of visitors under the age of 10 was 0(zero that is).

OK, then why are swear words censored? I'm sure all of your adult users have heard them before. Are you concerned with the younger users? If that's the case then why are you showing the saucy ads?

IMO, you should either stop showing the ads, or loosen your standards regarding censoring

"Yah-hah, evil spider woman! I have captured you by the short rabbits and can now deliver you violently to your gynecologist for a thorough extermination."

beyond that, the censoring of words is done for two reasons:
      1) purely an aesthetic choice(we and lots of our visitors prefer not to see such language)
      2) younger audience(if one child doesnt learn one word from this forum instead of the real world, the censoring has worked imho)

On behalf of the women and gays at Apolyton, I would like to suggest that, to ensure total equality when it comes to advertising, for every ad there is showing a half naked (or fully naked) woman, we get an ad showing a half naked (or fully naked) man. Thank you.

Would starchild and goofydrew please grow up? I know this may be difficult for them, but some of us do take this topic seriously, and I find the levity they bring into this string grossly insulting.

Well sorry, but sometimes a little humour is what is needed to keep everyone calm.

On second though, I'm going to be a ***** tonight. I withdraw the smilie in my post. I'm dead serious about it now. I'm sick of being ignored by advertisers and companies. Open, out-of-the-closet, for all the world to see, Gays are, on average, more wealthy and more loyal to the companies that serve them. Yet we are pushed to the sidelines again and again. Well, I'm sick of it. I'm tired of having to view semi-naked women that I did not request to see nor desire to see. There are plenty of gay-friendly NetAds, from PlanetOut Visas to Ashford.com. Why aren't they displayed here? They are far less degrading than a lot of the ads I've seen here.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Taking in mind that audience of game sites is usually also for 90% male, it makes sense that lots of ads are targeted towards straight males.

Secondly, Apolyton doesn't choose the ads that are displayed. If you really care, go complain to ugo.

I don't care about Apolyton or Ugo. I'm disgusted that I, a completely ignored demographic, am getting yelled at by someone who the entire corporate-commercial complex is targeting. I resent being told to grow up by a twelve year old, who has never even talked to me before, when all I tried to do is inject a little humour into this discussion.

i know, mada. humour is a good thing. by the way, starchild, don't take mada personally he's a liitle sideways in the head sometimes, and gets carried away. I would know (he goes to my school) He practically has no sense of humour for these kinds of things, and probably didn't even know you were joking. But seriously, everybody who posts here still complaining about the banners, listen to the administrators! For crissakes (can i say that?) how many times do they have to tell you that they have absolutely no control over the topic.

First thing first; I apologize, Starchild. I was generally upset about the contents of this forum, and my post was just as much responding to goofydrew's comments as yours. I understand that you were just trying to bring some humor into a generally humorless topic, and retract what I said in leu of some of your later posts.

I would also like to say this now; DanQ and MarkG, you both are great guys, and I understand how hard you try to keep this site together. (With this in mind) I understand your arguments, but I continue to believe that more can be done by apolyton to help solve this problem. If we all (the users, the admins., etc) make a fuss over the issue, then the UGO can't help but to change its adds. Customer opinion is everything to advertising firms, because it has to be.

I understand that this is MarkG and DanQ's site, and they have the final say. I also believe, however, that this problem can be fixed, if we all put our hearts into it. We can't just say collectively 'Well, we can't fix it, so it's not our problem'. Rather, it makes it all the more our problem.

Again, I apologize to Starchild, for the comments that I made after jumping to conclusions. .
