I wonder about this from time to time, especially in the midst of a spamfest like we recently were graced with here. "Threads with posts about nothing, a summer replacement series...uncover the fine line between friendly, sometimes interesting banter and meaningless +1 tangents."

    Two paraphrases come to mind...

"Imagine no more post counts, ...."

"I have a dream, that one day, posters will be judged by the quality of their offerings rather than the sheer number they can throw at the boards."

    And this observation...

Post counts are like hitting in baseball. If folk would just focus on making contact, the batting average (PC) will take care of itself. And the game will be more fun for everyone. Fun things like watching as an active warlord gets kissed by a frog and becomes a prince (you know who you are )

It is obvious from the vitality of the OTF that having posts there count is completely unnecessary for it to thrive. Can the same be said for the rest of the site??

    Monk

I guess there's a splendid irony in the fact that this thread is turning to a gratituous spamfest ...

Just finished another 1000+ characters post in the OT.
And I suddenly wondered, if someone types more than 100 chars in a post it can hardly be concidered as spam anymore.

'Cause no-one can be bothered to read them?

A measure of how active a poster is?
But for me it would be the feeling that all the typing I did won't go unnoticed, and will at least be rewarded with a postcount point

It gives you the feeling that your staying on poly makes sence. Which does profit poly, since that feeling made me become an inmate.
I'd actually rather like if OTF posts counted - discluding those, but not the equally non-civ-related ones here seems arbitrary - but discriminating based on character count seems downright weird to me. Count all the spam or none of it.

What exactly, beyond gettin' me a custom avatar sooner, would be the point in having some OTF posts count for postcount?

there's no need to patrol for that.
Any post you see with a big quote in it is toast.

Besides that, you ignore what I said about with javascript removing the quotes from the character-count.

I don't like this. It's not like the size of a post is a good indication of spamhood anyway.

It's easy with javascript to not count the quoted characters. I can make such a script.

And of course it's always good to have the rule that one shouldn't quote for no reason. AND PCR for useless quotes
