I had to enter a bunch of personal info as I was transferring money. It actually opened an account for me, on the fly.

BTW, I think we subscribers should have something in our avatar section that notes that we did subscribe, ala "member" or "subscriber" or something.

I also think subscribers should have all posts count, including the OT. Non-subscribers who lapse should have their post counts "frozen" until re-subscription.

I say this while having already subscribed but not having read the FAQ.

                Aren't they already planning this?

This will happen. We'll have a badge similar to Markos', if we want so (it'll be an option of the control panel)

I disagree. The lack of post-count in the OT is what makes spam tolerated there. If posts began to count in the OT, many more funny threads or useless threads would be closed / deleted in order not to "feed the spam sharks". Look at the Apolyton / Community forum, and see how trigger-happy the mods are with closing threads.

Letting OT posts count would change the tone of the OT. Mods would be foreced to be more harsh and the OT would be even less fun than it is now.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

                      ... after reading through thread...

The Apolyton lifetime rate is a mere two-three months worth of cable, everybody. My God, for a large number of us $125 amortized over all the hours already spent on Apolyton is shockingly cheap, cheaper than almost any sort of entertainment out there.

I've always felt that subscription services were the way to go in providing popular "niche" sites with continual cash flow. I wonder how much the SDMB going to pay to play affected the decision here?

Though I must admit the advantages given to the subscribers don't represent much to me I greatly appreciate the increased downloading speed of the various pages along with the speed when you are posting or editing a post.

However, the addition of a subscription service changes the social dynamic here, where status will be determined if a poster actually "supports" Apolyton not on post counts.

How about non-subscribers don't get post counts at all?

I am still getting the RHS banner on my preferred "Default special" setting - when I change to another setting it goes away, but on return to Default special it is still there ...

Not. The decision was made much earlier. Though their example may have helped working out some of the implementation details, but you'd have to ask Dan and Mark about that.
