  • Pop-ups, Again

Take it up in the community forum.

But, there's always a thread about it there so any new ones would probably be closed.
Per rah's request, I will take this topic up on here the Community Forum. I know there is already a thread on the Gator pop-up, but am unable to post on that thread because of the "cannot modify header information" bug.

Please do not delete this thread.

I understand that Apolyton needs ads to cover expenses. And I have no great objection to pop-ups given the alternatives available. The owners of this site have every right to make that call. Its their site.

However, this morning I am being positively assaulted by pop-ups. I'm getting two or three pop-ups every time I open a thread, turn a page, or hit refresh. At least one of every set of pop-ups wants to install software on my machine, or plays music (which is a real pain in the ass when browsing from work).

I have not seen this level of pop-ups at Apolyton before this morning. It greatly detracts from my enjoyment of the site. I generally ignore other sites which have this level of pop-ups. They are just too aggravating. Is there something that can be done to fix this???

    (edit: spelling)

The header bug shouldn't stop you from posting in a thread. It juast stops you for goin the the last post of new post. But you can go to a given pagenumber. So I see no reason for why you had to post a new thread...

I concur the situation has got worse recently. So far I have avoided blocking given the role the pop-ups play in funding 'Poly, but I'm getting very tempted.

Some suggestion point at the fact thaat if your clear your browser history, and clear your cookie cache, you should get lesser pop-ups at least until the next time you log in.

Don't know if this is true, as I haven't tried it.

This is ridiculous -- I can tolerate one pop-up or maybe two, but this is going overboard.

What does it take for moderators and webmasters of Apolyton to realize that the vast majority of users simply ignore the pop-up ads by immediately closing them. And that this only antagonizes the users of Apolyton when these pop-ups intterupt their use of this website?

The mods probably don't sign up that many advertisers, and DanQ has stated that the current number of pop-ups will continue until such a time that a decision has been taken to introduce a subscription model or not.

The pop-ups are MUCH worse today compared to even yesterday, when I would get one on first arriving at Apolyton

Today it is one for every thread visited, including software downloads

Something has changed - can we be told what and why?

I don't fvcking care what their fvcking reason is for the exessive number of fvcking pop-ups -- it's just fvcking nuts.

I'm not sure what kind of deal 'poly has with advertisers, but if it's one of the click-through payment systems where you only have to use the advert to visit the sponsor's site and 'poly gets paid but do not have to buy anything, then we can all spend a while clicking through to amazon or wherever and then there will be no need for pop-ups for some time.
I doubt things work like that though.

Things have definitely taken a turn for the worse! Even as I reply to this thread an offer to download some software pops up... Very annoying!

Besides, Gator and the software they promote is known to be very aggressive, finding out and logging your surfing habitudes...

Pleased to read that Mark will look into it!
