  • "nickserv" is down

Actualy I got the message that nickserve was "busy" for the last two days. Now, today, I just don't get a response from it. I was wondering whom I should contact about that?

IRC Nickserv? What's that got to do with 'Poly?

Well, since apolyton.net is the server I think it's appropriate to ask in Apolyton's community forum.

Well if there is a problem with IRC Nickserv there is nothing the 'Poly admins can do.

Don't worry.........probably another run of idiots trying to take Nickserv down. Probably be back tomorrow.

Well, as far as I know, someone from Poly runs the IRC server. Who, now that MarkG is away, I don't know. Nickserv has been down or "busy" for a total of 3 days. I doubt it will restore itself; hence I am posting here about its condition.

BTW, I've seen Chanserv go down and back up several times, but this is a first for Nickserv. Maybe the powers that be should assign a Mod for the IRC server.

Chatroom seems to be working fine for me, and there are other people in there.

IRC's not set up that way. Each server maintains its own services, including NickServ and ChanServ.

You CAN have a chatroom without nickserv or chanserv. However, nickserv is used to register nicks and identify people by seeing if they've put in the correct password, and chanserv is used to register channels so that ruffians don't try to take them over, or unwanted people try to get in them.

                it would be nice.

I think DanQ has fixed the IRC server in the past in addition to MarkG, but Mark is the one who usually does it.

Server error. Markos and Dan have access to the IRC server, but generally it is Markos who does this, even with him in the army.

Yes there is. Each server has it's own NickServ and ChanServ domain (N.B. this term is not used in the internet usage of the word i.e. domain name). If the server has a problem (I refer to the IRC server, not "Settler II"), then it is up to the admins to fix their service.

No it won't, unless Markos or Dan fix it overnight.

Markos/Dan need (I think) to restart NickServ. Therefore, you were correct to post here so Dan/Markos can fix it, as neither peruse the apolyton.net IRC server that much. You are also correct that it will not fix itself

Happens to both. Again, it is often server errors, and requires a simple restart in the case of Nickserv, though I am not accustomed with Chanserv An IRC operator would not be sufficient as he only controls what is said in the said room he operates. And IRC admin (i.e. Markos/Dan) are the only people who can restart the NickServ service on apolyton.net. However, an IRC operator for the server would be benificial to the IRC experience, I am most sure.

As it would. Picture a store. Imagine a stationary aisle has just been tipped over, with pens all over the place (in this case, NickServ). People can still access the Frozen products or Meat & Poultry aisles (in this case, ChanServ or the actual IRC channels).

You can also have Nicks without Nickserv. However, nickserv is the mainstay of IRC operators on channels away from #apolyton. As I have previously stated, Nickserv is not vital, though highly beneficial to the IRC experience.

Thanks for the explanation Frozzy. Maybe Dan or Mark can make someone an admin to take care of the irc server. You sound like you could do the job.

I also take it that a message to Dan, from me, about nickserv, is not now needed?

Once again the IRC service of ACS has trouble. Oh, well, not any news really.

None of you seem to use the right names for the different IRC related concepts.

Thanks. Though it seems all registrations are lost. People will just have to re-register their nicks. Thanks for taking care of this Mark.
