New Multiplayer Game

I'm a multiplayer newbie who's ready to take the plunge. I'm looking for other players and an MC, SMAC or SMAX, huge map, directed research, no alien factions. Six players total (?) Claim your faction. Other newbies especially welcome.

i'm not exactly a newbie, but i haven't played vs humans in a while. i'd like to get in a game. i like gaians, but i'll play anyone. hopefully one of the knights of pbem will offer to chairman...

I'm interested, but have only SMAC. I'm a relative MP newbie (a few LAN games with housemates).

I'd like to be the Peacekeepers.

I'd be interested in playing as the University. I'm a BPEM newbie as well, though I'm starting quite a few games at the moment. I'd prefer SMAX, but if we choose SMAC, we should play with the 5.0 patch.

And yes, we should pester some PBEM vets long enough so that one of them agrees to be the CMN.

Another quick question. People are refering to SMAC v. 5.0. I've always understood that to mean SMAX. So do I need to get anything if I'm using 4.0 right now? If so, a link would be appreciated.

The 5.0 patch for SMAC is the XP Compatibility patch. It's available for download here. I'd say it's pretty darn important, since it fixes the golden age pop booms (Morgan and Yang can actually boom now) and the maintanence bug.
