Uhm... well... I think that the bugs could possibly be fixed, no problem at all. Just check what the modders did with CTP2. And that was only with slic language, not open code.

Such a project would have to start with the user interface. Facinating game, awkward gameplay.

There is an effort to make a open source game loosely based on AC, although it's still in pre-alpha and will end up looking much different from AC. You can join the discussion right here on Poly.
