Maybe we should worry more about games being fun and less about them being realistic.

sorry if you have read this somewhere else already, and if the question was not direted to me or to a general audience, but I won't let pass any occasion to repeat it:
as a matter of fact, SMAC/X apart, the only games that I still play from time to time to get some distraction and entertaining (up to the point that I expressly kept a true DOS partition on my machine for them) are:
Master of Magic
Machiavelli the Prince.
I have some other games still installed on my pc, like Stars!, MoO 2, Angband, Tropico, Age of Wonders, Settlers III, but regardless of the feelings I may have for them, the plain reality is that I've not started any of them once during 2002 (or even earlier maybe).
Hmmm... maybe this post has nothing to do with this thread, but I don't want to erase what I'v written now!I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it (Holden Caulfield)

Yes, well I don't find µmgmt much fun. I thought I said that I do play SMAC now and again, I just get bored with it if it devolves into missile exchanges and endless nudging of formers. I enjoy tampering with alpha.txt to eliminate the stuff I don't like.
MoO2 is enjoyable in its own way; the interface helps to reduce µmgmt somewhat. Mostly I play Civ2, and as I said, I'm looking to Freeciv to allow the kind of gameplay that is both realistic and fun. I'm astounded by the number of people who are convinced that you can't have both.
I've played CtP2 because I wanted to extend into the future but found the trade model almost as lackluster as Civ3 (basically no economic trade at all). I tried EU2 but found it nerve-wracking at any pace that would finish in my lifetime.
I occasionally break out the old DOS games Warlords II (which can be a real challenge against enhance opponents) and Castles II (one of the few truly strategic real-time games ever, with mediocre tactical combat an option). I found HoMM I to be as quaint as Warlords II but not as enjoyable; HoMM II fun in limited doses; but HoMM III became a bear because of the excessive number of classes and skills.
Lastly, I enjoy Roller Coaster Tycoon. Really a toy rather than a game.(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!
