  • Newbie SMAC patch question

    Hi everyone,

    I finally got around to buying Alpha Centauri (having played the demos oh so long ago...) and I'm about 300 years into my first game. At this point, I wonder if I wouldn't be better off installing a patch, so I find and install patch 4.0 (I think). Now when I start the game a warning message says something like : "cpu is not supported, game may crash. continue? cancel?" When I click "continue" it dumps me back to my windows desktop.

    I uninstalled everything and reinstalled the unpatched version.

    I have a Pentium4 running Windows ME. Any ideas on what I should do? (thanks in advance)

    Look in your Alpha Centauri.ini folder. (ME may not be showing file extension in Windows Explorer, adjust the view to show them.)

    You must have the following lines in the file, either at the beginning, or as in my case, at the end.

    [PREFERENCES]
    ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

    I have this entry three lines below the rest of the lines in the file.

    You'll still get the CPU not supported message, but after clicking OK the game plays anyway.

      Here's the most recent thread which addressed this: should fix your problem!

      Welcome to the wonderful world of SMAC(X)!

      Edit: Looks up, sees Mongoose beat me by mere seconds, "Curses! beaten to the post by Mongoose again!"

        Thank you, Mongoose and Darsnan. After a considerable interlude of watching the X-Files, my Alpha Centauri seems to be in perfect working order. Let the games begin!
