  • How do I manually install SMAC?

    Hello,

I've done all the updating of WinXP Pro I can think of and I still can't install SMAC. Could someone please walk me through installing it manually? Thanks.

EA tech support, although slow, does still support this game. I had problems with my sound in the game, and they fixed it right up. I would give them a call.

Incidentally... didn't you already have a thread about this started?

          erm... "manually" as opposed to?
How would you install it other than manually?
I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it (Holden Caulfield)

            Hi,

I called EA tech and they talked me through the compatibility modes, but that didn't work.

Well, most games have automatic installers that load them onto your hard drive. When I say manually, I meant copying the game to the hard drive using Explorer and then expanding the .cab archives somehow. However, according to EA that isn't possible.

I do have it running now. I was able to run the installer on a system running XP Home (I hadn't considered this prior to calling EA, as I thought it would bomb there, too). Then, after I applied all patches and installed the expansion, I copied everything back to my system. Now it runs fine, without even needing a compatiblity mode.

So, thanks eveyone. Now I can play.

Cant you just copy the cd contents to your hd, right-click on the .exe, properties, and switch the compatability to Win2k or WinNt service pack 5 or something, install it and do the same for the "terran.exe" file?
If i agree with you, we'll both be wrong...

                Hi,

No, I tried copying to my hard drive and installing from there with and without compatibility, but had no luck.

Fortunately, the game itself has no problems with my system and I can run it without worrying about compatibility modes at all. It was just the installer that had a problem.

Funny thing, the game installed without a hitch on my XP Home system, even though I didn't turn on ANY compatibilty modes at all. Seems so odd. Again, thanks for the help, everyone.

Does XP have a 'safe mode'?

Some games can be installed from CD copies while WIN O/S is in safe mode.

But XP I am not sure about.
