Installing Patch 4.0

Just got SMAX with the SMAC 3.0 patch on the CD. What is my install order for all the patches?

I've got the 4.0 patch for SMAC - do I still need it if I want to play SMAC Classic? Do I re-install it after installing SMAX? When do I install the SMAX patches?

Just install the last SMACX patch. It should install all prior patches including SMAC 4.0. If you have any doubts, just check the readme file.

I've tried to install the patch twice. I've downloaded the .exe file and then clicked on it. Both times I haven't been able to play the game, so I just reinstall from the CD. I'm happy with the unpatched, un-expansioned SMAC. Am I missing that much by not having the Manifold Nexus (and wheel mouse) and not having the SMAX factions? What could be wrong with the way I'm trying to install the patch?
