  • Re: Stealing Tech

I just started wondering today about how it's determined what tech you get when a probe team "procure's" research data. Does anyone know if there's any relationship between what the base is building and what tech you get? I ask because I had an uncanny experience in my game today. Or maybe I just noticed it for the first time... Yang was my next-door neighbor (of course!).
We got into it and I stole Doctrine:Mobility off him. I'm pretty sure the base was making a rover. Later, I stole Superconductor, and I know the base was making a gatling unit. Later still I stole Polymorphic Software, and the base was making an artillery unit!
Those were the only three techs I had stolen the whole game, and I was starting to get the idea that maybe, if you need a specific tech, you should try to steal it from a base that is making something that uses that tech. I confirmed that it doesn't work 100%, when I later probed Advanced Sub (oh **** it) theory from Zakharov - that base was making a trance 3-res garrison. But I can't help but wonder... Can anyone confirm that the tech you get is totally random? Or might it be influenced by the particular bases' production? I've never considered this before in all my smac! Anyone?

if you try reloading several times, you'll find it is random - equally likely for all available techs

And what if you already have a tech that is related to the unit being built? Therefore, it is most likely a coincidence.

But neet that you would notice this!
