  • Some thoughts on Naval Warfare

During my last two games I have totally changed my marine strategy.

The problem of fighting on Chirons oceans is simple: Best-weapon-best-armor ships are expensive, and the AI cheats in finding Your ships. Everyone of us has lost ships to AI warships coming out of the nothing and knowing exactly where to find You.

Formerly I have mostly used a "lone shark"-strategy, where I used single best-best-cruisers to attack isolated, bad defended AI seabases.

And I have asked me if it is useful give ships best armour. That seemed to be the wrong question now. The right question is: Need ships best weapon?

For a long time of the game, plasma or 3r-armour is the best avaliable. This means, on the open ocean, simple and cheap particle armour is strong enough to sink every ship. Best weapon is only needed for attacks on sea bases.

The 4-best-armour ships have the huge advantage that they were incredibiliy cheap. I equip them with AAA and blink special abilities.

I use now ships in pairs of two.
    1. "Shark": best-weapon, best amour, AAA and marine detatchment
    2. "Auxilliary Cruiser": particle weapon, best armour, AAA and blink

These pairs are ideal to attack sea bases, especially with some air support. The blink of the auxilliary cruiser often allows to detect the AI's ships early enough.

And with silksteel or above, the auxiliary cruiser is a neat thing to terrorize the enemies sea base cluster, destroying sea-formers, trawlers, sea enhancements and coastal terraforming.
In my current game as Morgan, one of these got the "hero of the week", when it destroyed Svens planetbuster, ready to be fired in my well developed bases, in an undefended Pirate seabase :-)!

I thought blink allowed you to bypass the base defenses !?
Were you referring to Deep Radar maybe ?

      Aredhran!
Of course Your are right, I was referring to Deep radar.
I have the German version of the game, and sometimes it is difficult to translate things correctly.

I just noticed something yesterday, Marine detachment captures ships and they are independent. That makes the ability 100% more usful IMO. Even better when it captures a transport the cargo is independent too. I'm sure it must have applications for Free Marketeers, especially ones running Demo.
