whats the largest pop you've had for 1 base

for me it was 35.
I had the clone vets, I think without this SP it's impossible to get such a high population.
Food is normally not the problem for my cities, because
I allways launch a lot of orbs. You can also use crawlers to get more food.
Drone riots are no problem for very big cities any more, because any new pop above 21 automatically is an empath.
But I normally get hab complexes very late in the game, because I play blind research. That restricts me more from getting very big bases than food supply or drones.
If You want to get very big bases, you should launch hydrolabs from time to time as soon as you get the tech. They also are very usefull if you conquer bases and have to turn the workers into doctors or talents to prevent drone riots. If You get hab complexes and can pop boom with the clone vets ore by +6growth through SE, You will get really big bases.

I was at 65 in one game when I transcended. I did have about 50 hydroponics labs and was using sea crawlers for about 6 bases that had pops in the 50-60's range. I think you can go up to 128, and I think there are players who have done it. Most of the good players probably transcend before they would get this high, so would have to almost delay the transcend to pop boom with the vats that high. I've always wondered how high a pop anyone ever had in an MP game, as this would be much more difficult.

. Up to a register limit, 127 I believe, you can get as high as you want with the cloning vats and a lot of sky farms. I usually cut off each base at not more than twice its workable squares, to maintain a golden age (must have 1/2 talents) for a base with no overlap this would be 40 population, 20 talents & twenty transcends.

I had a size 50-odd base once which was still growing - drones aren't really an issue, as long as you crawler in a decent amount of energy. In fact, I think the base may have been in a golden age....
The number of transcends became ridiculous - it made a hefty contribution to the overall labs points...

My highest to date in an MP game was a size 30 city in MY 2198, when I transcended. That was on the tourny map, which is pretty small, and it was a SMAX game so aquafarms were available.
Growing cities of this size is most practical to do after space flight - with serious hydroponic satellite production you need only generate one food per pop in the base, which isn't hard to do on the coast. Satellites are less vulnerable to attack than food crawlers, require no terraforming and don't occupy a tile so I find them altogether more efficient and cost-effective.
You don't have to have the Vats - a standard pop boom will work fine using either demo/planned/creche or (later) demo/x/x/eudaimonia/creche. Planned gets a bad press in the mid to late game, but I often still use it, particularly as the Gaians. The industry bonus of planned is very useful when you're trying to build large numbers of hab domes/hydroponics satellites and other expensive items. And on smaller map sizes where expansion is limited, the inefficiency is not particularly damaging.
There are no drone problems in very large cities - you have so many specialists there's simply no room for them . This is particularly true once you have transcendi.
