  • fungus towers below crawlers

Sometimes when I got worm boils because of ecodamage, a embryonal fungus tower appears below a crawler, especially below crawlers working a borehole.
I can't move the crawler away from the fungus tower (because of the towers ZOC's?), and If I try to destroy the tower, I destroy both the fungus tower and my crawler.
Is this some sort of bug, and has someone solutions to save the crawler and kill the fungus tower?

Move a former - or another unit - to a tile adjacent to the tower, then move your crawler on top of the former. You can then destroy the tower.

Also, if you find a huge tower, by clearing the surrounding tiles' and planting forests (or farms, I guess - I've only ever planted forests), the tower reduces in size for every adjacent terraformed tile until it's small enough to take out with a 1-1-1 scout.

      Thanks, Googlie, that's the solution!

Clearing fungus IS enough, I did it several times

Fungus will expand into forests, just like forests will expand into fungus. Funguses and forestses fightses. Not sure exactly how or why. I was trying to shrink a tower by planting forests all around it, and I had to do a couple patches twice, because the fungus grew over it.

I don't know about farms, either, but I do know that forests won't expand over them.

I don't know your exact situation, but it does say in the manual that a fungal tower can place a tile of fungus in any surrounding square. I assume this is a given percentage chance (Prima guide anyone? ), and can overrun present enhancements.

Unfortunately, Prima wrote their guide before any of the smac patches came out, so fungal towers weren't covered - you are stuck with the datalinks (or concepts.txt) for that.

I had forest patches covered by fungal tower expansion.
So they don't guarantee you to keep hold of the patches you cleared.

With XenoDome and 4 fungicidals, I could remove 1 fungus patch per turn (one couple moves, the other removes...).
You're blocking tf resources in the task, but you don't have to complete the task before the tower is soft enough to attempt attacking it. And after all if you want to use that land, you'd have to remove the fungus anyway.

You shouldn't need to remove fungus if you go with a decent-moraled empath chopper - the cash windfall of a large fungal tower is very nice indeed

Even a demon boil shouldn't be able to stand up to it, even without a positive planet rating....

                  Empath Chopper:
                  Psi: 3
                  Empath: +50%
                  Hardened: +12%
                  Total: 5.04

                  Demon Boil fungal tower:
                  Psi: 2
                  Elite: +50%
                  Fungal tower: +50%
                  Total: 4.50

If you want to increase the odds slightly, the morale can be taken a lot higher than hardened. But even so, the 70 credits are a nice bonus, even mid-game - and it saves you a lot of trouble with Fungicidal Formers.

I forgot to say that I did that math too, but my pseudo-casual generator must be rigged against FTs....

LOL, ain't that the truth - how are the battle odds calculated anyway? Is it just like dice-rolling, or is there some other element involved somewhere?

ROTFL - I hadn't seen it before - only noticed it just now, and I quoted it! I'm sure it was intentional, I can't imagine someone doing that inadvertantly...
