  • Why do we like to be Chairman Yang

Face it: Hive is the most played faction in AC. Let`s post all the reasons for playing as Yang (and all things we like to do while playing as Yang).

    Cool quotations.

Can go Police State and Planned without penalties.

    Did I mention cool quotations?

It is easy to imagine yourself dictator of a totalitarian society.

Underground bases (guess they make genejacks out of agoraphobiacs ).

    Etc.

    Please continue.

AND DISCUSSION ABOUT HIVE BEING TOO POWERFULL IS BELOW!!!

You can easily make excuses to be evil.

    You already mentioned cool quotations.

You usually get to beat the tar out of the U.N. Peacekeepers.

Everyone is basically a communist dictator at heart.
We'd like to run a society where democracy is an IMPOSSIBILTY.

Actually for my favourite Yang quotations theres no need to play the Hive, just build the VW.

The main thing I love about the hive, is when another faction has 1 scout patrol and 1 former, the hive has 2 scout patrols and 2 formers . Which gets back to that can go Police State without penalty thing.

However having a good excuse for killing both Lal and Miriam is also a big plus.

Yang is nigh on superhuman both physically and mentally.

YOU DON'T NEED EXCUSES TO KILL LAL, anybody asks why you're doing that then they have usurped your authority and they too must die.

Being one with the race and the race being one with your will removes all aspects of chaos and impurity, humanity becomes a colony of bees/ants all working in harmony towards a greater goal, losing all petty differences.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Chairman Sheng-ji Yang, "Essays on Mind and Matter"

This is the best Yang Quotation.
No wait it is this one:

It is every citizen's final duty to go into the tanks and become one with all the people.
Chairman Sheng-ji Yang, "Ethics for Tomorrow"

No, I better go and make a poll about it.

but for a sudden gust of wind...

I'm glad I was not in the Hive's landing pod in this game. (I had a look around after launching my first satellite.)
I think maybe the first order of business was a change of underwear for anyone who happened to be looking out a window and saw where they almost landed

Actually, if you think about the idea of top-down production (as in a leader directly sets build queues and dictates specific changes in economy), you've basically got a Planned society already in place.

Given that this is how most people play SMAC, I think part of the reason is simply greater control. Otherwise, you'd be automating your units and delegating governors to handle all your production.

Actually, I don't like to be Yang. I dislike his totalitarian vision and his intent to make us all act like mindless ants or bees. I have to admit that he is doing that because he really believes in his doctrine, while Morgan, for instance, is just a greedy capitalist pig who doesn't give a damn about his own followers.

But I despise any form of dictatorship. If you had lived under the oppression of a dictatorship, you'd despise it too.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

You're not killed for not being an elite soldier, theres a job for everyone
You're not forced to believe in something, everybody is athiest.
You're not thrown away when you're pockets are empty, decadence will not be tolerated.
You're not given an extra leg to see if you can walk faster.
You're not forced to live in a cave with wild creatures.
You're not subject to the rule of a jellyfish, lead by example.

On quite a few occasions Yang is portrayed like a karate mentor, guiding his pupils, he is pleased when you do well, and punishes you when you fail.

Good to see Laz still is a Disciple of Yang.

If one looks at Yang's society, he has in effect created THE egalitarian society. Every one is equal and additionally, beats out Miriam in terms of honesty. He has eliminated the 7 Deadly Sins from his society and has created perfect harmony. Everyone has a place in society, and no one is left behind.

Compare Yang with Morgan, Lal, Miriam, or Deidre......I'll pick Yang any day.

The historical downfall of dictatorships is that the dictators keep dying and sooner or later someone unfit fills the position and causes enough people to hate him that they revolt. In the Alpha Centauri world, this does not happen, though the dictator himself could change over time. Thus, a benevolent dictator (yes, I would consider Yang that) could rule indefinitely and might even generate an appealing society.

However, any dictatorship is plagued by philosophical problems at the least, and Yang has his own personal problems...
