    Saving Private Artifact

What am I doing wrong again?

Twice near the end of killing off the AI I have attacked a base which contained an AA. After killing the last defenders, I get the message ' you have captured an AA' . But the captured AA hasn't turned up in any of my bases yet (well after 1 turn so far in one game and not at all in another).

In both instances I killed the last defender with a plane or chopper.

Can you only capture an AA with a ground or sea unit? If so why the message if by air.

It doesn't goto your base, it goes into the square controlled by the attacker.
I'm not sure if choppers can capture them though ? ... i think they can ... ?
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

I indeed think the air unit is the root of the problem.

Also something else to keep in mind re artifacts, IIRC artillery fire destroys artifacts instead of capturing them.

An air unit CAN capture and artifact at least in a SMAX PBEM-- hercules it happened in our clockwork game where I hit a cult base and killed the last defender and the artifact showed up in my territory. I have had instances however where the artifact flys somewhere that is accessible to the AI and they recapture it on the next turn-- or I have repeatedly had the coincidence of the AI discovering a new AA on the same turn that mine disappears.

I also believe I have had instances where a "captured" AA has completely disappeared but my memory on this is fuzzy
