  • Wtf??

I'm a long time SMAC player. I just got the expansion and am merrily playing along, in my third game or so (Zak at Transcend). Suddenly,

    BEFORE

    AFTER

Is this a new event in SMAX? I've never seen it before!

What exactly are you talking about? More information as to the nature of your confusion (question?) might elicit helpful advice.

Never mind...I figured it out! It was hard to see in the poor image quality of the screenshots.

You got hit by an asteroid! Look on the bright side, you got a new Garland Crater out of the deal.

My city was obliterated by an asteroid strike!

Oh well. I found a strat guide, and apparently this could happen in SMAC, too. Never happened to me before though. =O

yeah - happens in SMAC as you say.

          Prima's guide says:

          Asteroid Strikes Base

This never happens before turn 75, and only if the base's faction is in first place. It destroys everytthing nearby, including the base itself, and makes a new crater a la Garland Crater

I've never had it happen to me, but have played games where it's happened to the AI

Never happened to me despite the fact that I am always ahead. I have, however, had TWO volcanic eruptions in the same game!!!

I've never had asteroids strike. However, does it only ever affect human players? If I were to cede a few bases to H'Minee and let her take first place, an Asteroid Strike on her biggest base would really really really help me out here! Especially given that practically every single SP she has is in that base.

Ah... the trials and terrors of playing Iron (Wo)Man...

Still, at least I might make another Margaret Thatcher.

Ah my dear Alinestra, if it were only that easy...

Asteroid strikes are very rare. I have never seen one myself, and believe me I have tried to force the issue. I am almost beginning to think the fabeled event does not exist and everyone here is trying to make me go crazy by making up something they know I will search long and hard, low and high for, and never have my satisfaction...

                  Kinjiru,

Try a heavy eco-damage game. Planet goes nutty in all sorts of ways when that happens.

                    Alinestra,

I tried playing Iron Man a few times, but the air defense crashes are way too annoying.

                    Kinjiru,

                    Here's to tilting against windmills!

                    Cheers!

                    Kaz:

Funny thing is, I had no eco damage going in any cities. The city that got whacked contained the Planetary Energy Grid, so two turns later an Energy Surge event wiped out all the mines around another city!

Air defense crashes? What crashes are these? So far I've discovered that I'm not really up to the task of going versus the two alien factions on Iron Woman. I'm playing as the Hive with the Usurpers cornered and ailing to the north, and the Caretakers with dominance of the central island of Planet (the one with the Uranium Flats). I have to resort to Nerve Gas units to whack both aliens... and even then, I've foregone the entire theory of taking and holding bases! I'm now just aiming to hit them with as much Nerve Gas as I possibly can, loaded onto needlejets, and actually remove their cities from the face of Planet!

I wonder what animation will be shown if I succeed in actually DESTROYING and not capturing the last Aliens' bases. Presumably there won't even be a H'minee or Marr to capture and torture, as in the cutscenes.

I've had the dubious distinction of being nailed in two different games by an asteriod strike. This event is easily more rare than pod-popping a Mark II Battle Ogre or getting in an orbital war with the AI.

Alinestra, go ahead and gas with impunity. All a straight capture will get you is a size one city with crappy infrastructure, and likely as not, a bunch of alien colony pods to hunt down. Not such a great deal unless an SP will change hands. Just hang in there until you research or steal MMI and then you'll have the upper hand.

Air defence crashes. There was another thread on this topic but a quick recap: when your interceptor scrambles to protect a noncombat unit the game will sometimes crash. Another common crash seems to occur when you are at the top or bottom of the world. Apparently, disabling your mousewheel and your McAfee virus checker will get rid of these two problems.

Odd. Prince status seemed to occur at post #302 not #301. Off topic, I know, but what do you expect for a thread entitled Wtf??
