Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.
It's surprising how you portray the Uni and the Hive as enemies.
For me, I'd have thought they'd be natural allies. Yang and Zakharov both have a non-democratic moral code and neither seems particularly fussed about human rights issues.
I played a PBEM as Yang and Misotu was my guide and ally as Zak. After the game was over, Misotu did mention that the choice of factions was somewhat unfair, as Hive + Uni pacted is almost overly powerful.
~Grin~ Hey, Allinestra, blame that Greedy, money grubbing, probe framing, Morgan for that one! ~Nudges Yang~ Shall we have a Morgan fest? Say each of us gets half his bases? ~Begins to call in the Morgan haters~
~Shrugs~ Waht can we say, Qualicide. When the Minions of Yang are let out, chaos ensues. Time to nerve staple the people.
As for my least favorite faction, either the Pirates, Miriam, or Santiago. They either hate my faction or are too much of a nuisance, so out come the choppers & rovers. (unless I am playing Yang, in which case it is anybody that I can't make a submissive!)

Well, if you're a Western citizen who has lived in a country that has a history of democratic rule and whose education system and legal institutions have been shaped by centuries of philosophy stressing the individual over the group, then I suppose your view is understandable.
If you're an Eastern citizen who has lived in a country with a rich history of culture and civilization, albeit under nearly exclusively authoritarian rule throughout 6000 years, and whose education and legal systems have been influenced by group and social philosophies predating Christ that place the group above the individual, then maybe the Chairman's philosophy (and that of Chairman Mao, and those of the Emperors before him) would cause you less moral outrage.
If the contrast between these two views makes your head hurt, then you're just like me - a confused in-betweener.
There was a thread from years ago in which I courted controversy by daring to defend the Chairman's philosophy. It's very out of date and my own opinion on the matter has definitely undergone significant revision since then, but it might serve as an interesting place to start for those of you who are interested. (Searching for URL - hope it hasn't been deleted yet.)
For those of you who are content with the philosophical equation
however, I suspect you probably won't have the patience or interest to go through that thread and in any case, your present frame of mind is probably very comfortable wherever it is right now...
Let's not get this thread into a culture vs. culture debate!

I see your point.
