Master Builder and I are doing a PBEM, and I was struck on how the game changes without Unity pods. He chose landing-site Unity pod scattering during setup, and this makes pods incredibly valuable. It also has the interesting side effect, that I hadn’t previously appreciated, of massively slowing down research with no node-artifact pod tech lotto, and giving the AI a boost (since the AI is typically hopeless in harvesting or using pods effectively).
So, in our game it is 2272 and we still haven’t hit fusion power. I’m the Gaians (again), so my research rate has been only OK due to no FM. Still, even with wealth/GA and specialists it is hard going with minimal tech trades and no pod-node tech lotto. I should mention that we are role playing, so there is no vapid pop booming allowed – only when ‘justified’.
