  • Executive Veto Broke ?

I've been playing the original SMAC (no patches, updates, or expansions) since it first came out and I've always been able to use 'Veto' as Governor.

Last week I downloaded the latest patch (1.4 I think) and since then the Executive Veto doesn't work anymore. Twice now I've been well on my way to a conquest victory when an AI player calls for a vote to either 'Launch Solar Shade" or "Melt Polar Ice Caps". As Governor, with enough votes to easily avoid competition, I tried to Veto these proposals yet they 'Passed' anyway. Is this a bug or a new 'feature' ???

AFAIK, the executive veto could always be overridden with a unanimous vote of the others. That is why I always liked to have one surrendered pactmate that will vote with me, or that I could bribe cheaply.

In MP games the governor can veto changes with a pactmate, but cannot force a change, unless (s)he actually has the majority.

50% is not good enough, even with the governorship.

I play SMAC version 4.0 without ever having this problem. 4.0 is the latest patch (to my knowledge). If you really have 1.4, you should try a newer patch.
I don't own SMAX, but I think I recall that 1.4 is the latest SMAX patch. If you ever have got this one, I wonder that your game runs at all ...
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

Thanks for the info. Once I bribed the Spartans to vote 'NAY" I was able to Veto the proposal. I guess I never had a unanimous vote against me before. BTW, I do have version 4 (not 1.4). It seems that in previous versions the AI surrenderd more often, so I usually had an ally to vote with me. Now, they seem to always fight to the death.

Maybe your playing style has changed and you commit more atrocities now, or your reputation isn't impeccable any more?
