Is there anyway to mix and match factions from both the original and the crossfire expansion play each other? There does not seem to be a way from the menu options.

SMACX factions vs SMAC

If I am reading you correctly, yes.
When you start up a new game and you get to the faction selection screen, on the top are a light image of the original seven factions, the smax faction, and then a third image which if clicked on will give a random selection of both sets of factions. Also if you click on the down arrow to the right of the faction name you can pick individual factions to play against. You can even pick all one faction if you are so inclined to bore and confuse yourself.
If you are asking if you can mix all 14 factions together? Sorry, no."They’re lazy troublemakers, and they all carry weapons." - SMAC Manual, Page 59 Regarding Drones
"Without music, life would be a mistake." -- Friedrich Nietzsche
"If fascism came to America it would be on a program of Americanism." -- Huey Long
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same in any country." -- Hermann Goering

Agree. When I was borrowing my friends copy of 'X' I had it where Chairman Yang and the Free Drones were running rampant throughout Planet.....against a Cult of Planet/Gaians/Believers Triad.
(don't ask)
but 14 factions? Nope, sorry. Can't do it.Despot-(1a) : a ruler with absolute power and authority (1b) : a person exercising power tyrannically

14 factions would be impossible given the game's current constraints. Already the game runs fairly quirkily with just seven factions. There are a possible 6+5+4+3+2+1 different interfactional relations to keep track of, which would be 21 different values.
If you throw in 14 factions, then you'd have 13+12+...+1 which I can't be bothered to count right now but is much, much larger.
On the other hand, MDK is a superb game."lol internet" ~ AAHZ
