  • Old Unit Graphics Still in Game...

Want to see what I assume are early versions of the Mindworms and Alien Artifact? Go into alpha.txt (or alphax.txt) and find the UNITS section. Change the icon parameter for both those units to -1. Then start a new game, and use the scenario editor to plant some of these units. It's interesting. These are actual 3D units, like the others in the game: they animate, they rotate, the whole shebang. I can see why they were replaced, though. The worms look like vomit and the artifact looks like a poo. Actually, the worms look almost identical to the isle of the deep. I just wonder why they decided to go with 2D instead of 3D; maybe it was easier to go 2D, but the art for the 2D alien artifact is obviously made from a 3D model...

Anyway, if anyone else thinks they'd get a kick out of seeing these things, give it a try...

(I ran across this in my futile experiments to try to add more than three new units to the game)

Hey, I think they used them in the original demo, IIRC...they were changed for the full version!

Just checked them out, Firaxis made the right decision in changing them

I too am glad they changed it, for Firaxis' sake, because had the original alien artifact graphic made it into the game, the game would probably have been taken out of production for obscenity
