  • Morgan's Leap to the Stars

I just finished playing a rather long and fulfilling game as the Morganites, which I managed to win through transcendence (oh the irony ). I started out on the central continent, with Morgan Industries on the coast near the Freshwater Sea. I ended up next to Zakharov, who had a couple bases on the other side of the Freshwater Sea. I was prepared to get along with the Yoops, but apparently Zak was looking for a fight and I got involved in an early war. Luckily for me though, I rolled over him pretty quickly taking two of his three bases and encircling University Base forcing him to swear a pact to serve me

Following that short successful war I was all prepared to peacefully expand and make money like a good businessman. Unfortunately I stumbled across Yang who had landed down near Mt. Planet and he was expanding quickly as well. I managed to get a base founded to my east to secure my border with the Hive and I hoped that Yang would just leave me alone. Not to be. Yang declared vendetta and moved in with a rather large force on my easternmost base, Morgan Distribution. I decided my best strategy was to stay put and let his army break itself on my defenses. Zakharov and Santiago (who I had met by that time) helped me out by throwing me free units. Yang's offensive soon turned into an artillery bombardment not seen since World War I, with occassional probe thrusts aimed at my perimeter defense.

By this time the war was easily over 20 years old and I was anxious to end it and get back to making money, but I was waiting for MMI so I could strike a coup de grace with choppers. Once I did acquire MMI I moved in and tore his army and base defenses to shreads and occupied it. Yang agreed to pledge Blood Truce and the long war was finally over. I had long before decided that as soon as I captured a base and forced him to truce, that I would turn that base into the DMZ of Planet and I set about doing so. I stationed all of my ground combat units at the newly renamed Morgan Energy Monopoly and moved in a former to begin to terraform defenses. However Yang wasn't willing to sit long with the truce and we were soon at vendetta again. Once again I blitzed with my choppers and rovers and captured yet another base, renaming it Morgan Bank and adding to my DMZ, I handed over a third base to secure a second Blood Truce.

My former quickly planted forests on as much of the terrain as possible and built a sturdy net of sensor arrays to alert me of coming Hive units. With the war finally completed I turned my attentions to building and expansion. I had finally met the rest of the faction leaders. Santiago had a truce with me, Deirdre seemed willing to live and let live, Miriam was rather passive at first (I was using Fundamentalist when we first spoke) but she later decided to declare vendetta, and Lal declared vendetta soon as well because I was using Fundamentalist to aid my war effort against Yang. However the PKs and Believers were far away and I stuck to my pre-war ideals of expanding, building, and making money. I was raking in the cash and techs using a Demo/FM/Wealth combination.

But I kept getting involved with Yang, constantly taking Great Collective and returning it for Blood Truce. Santiago and Yang were soon the biggest factions on Planet, with Yang hammering away at almost everyone and the Spartans having a whole continent to themselves to expand. I seemed to be one of the most preeminent military powers on Planet though due to my constant victories over the Hive. I even had a Planetbuster stashed away at Morgan Industries. By the late 2400s and early 2500s I decided to end the vendetta with Lal, seeings as his choppers were finally starting to harass my home bases. I moved across the seas with imposing force of gravships and captured three of his bases forcing him to call for a Blood Truce. Miriam simply wasn't worth the effort. She was penned onto that island at the top of the map and was trading sea bases in a campaign with the Hive.

I finally completed the Voice of Planet and started the Ascent to Transcendence first, getting a leg up on the other factions and I was raking in the cash with a combination of Demo/Simple/Wealth/Eudaimonia. I got involved in a small war with Santiago but got her to agree to truce after taking one of her bases. Yang also decided to call for a vendetta again and I decided that it was a good time to test out my Planetbuster. I hurried the Ascent to Transcendence and than nuked The Hive taking it out along with three other Hive bases, and seeings I transcended the next turn all the vendettas were made irrelevant.

    Feels good to be so....evil

P.S. - I also initiated a cornering of the global energy market in 2565 IIRC, and thus would of won the game either way.

Did you have the Cloning Vats? If so, there's no reason not to be running Green for the extra efficiency, rather than Simple.

What made you decide to keep signing truces with Yang? Were I in your shoes, I'd be tempted to just subjugate him entirely, then you can enjoy sweet, nourishing pact income.

Other than that, it sounds as thought you played a nice, robust Morganite game, whose outcome is really quite inevitable.

No, no Cloning Vats. I didn't really want an out of control population causing drone riots on me.

      #1 - I didn't think of that.

#2 - It would of been a long and costly campaign. Especially by the end of the game, where he had legions of jets and I had a nasty, but smallish core of gravships for a military.

Remember, that if you use crawlers to harvest minerals, and assign all your new population to specialists, your drone count will not rise. I pack my bases fairly close together (within 3 squares of each other) for just that reason. Once all my workable squares are being worked, everyone else automatically becomes a doctor (or empath or transcend)

A well-entrenched and advanced Yang is the toughest opponent the AI has to offer, with the possible exception of a dominating Miriam. In these cases, I think the best plan is to probe away all their tech, then get a map. With the location of all their bases, you can then proceed to push through a suspension of the UN Charter, then crank out 5-10 planetbusters. With the UN Charter not in effect, Planet does not get annoyed at you for atrocities, including the discharging of planetbusting payloads. Once you've vaporized Yang's core of highly devloped bases he should fold rather quickly, and still leave enough bases for profitable trade.

If you're not feeling that atrocitous, consider granting all your tech to Zak, then granting him all the captured bases that you took from Yang. With a solid layer of buffer bases between you and commie-lad, you can build to your heart's content and let Zak do the conquering for you.

You should have overrun Yang at the time when you developed MMI and the first copters occured.

btw, you should have given the occupied bases back to Zak. He is a valuable partner. In some cases I build some extra bases and hand them over to him. This way you can ensure an advantage in research the whole game.

If Yang was well developed to have built a subtantial interceptor force, a copter assault may well be suicide. And returning bases to a conquered sumissive is a good idea only once your own faction has gone past the second bureaucracy limit, where structural drones really start to become a persistent problem. Trade income is swell and all, but early in the game, I find it's better to hold on to your conquests, and grant bases to my submissives once I've built my faction to a comfortable size. Your ideas do have merit, but it's hasty to assume we know all the circumstances in a game we've never seen.

By the end of the game, Yang was very well entrenched and I imagine it would of been very bloody to try and go after him. I think that Planetbusting him was the best option.

BTW, I've had this problem in another game I played. When your economy goes into a tailspin (ie, negative income) how do you stop the bleeding and get back into the black?

Hmmmm, how to overcome a collapsing economy? Boosting the amount energy that goes into the economy is the easiest way to go. Adding treaties and pacts will also substancially increase income. Selecting more economy friendly social choicees will help. More drastic options would include probing for energy, demanding energy from other factions, or destroying unnecessary base improvements.

I've never gone into a really bad economic tailspin so I'm not sure how exactly to pull out of one.

How did you get your bases into the red to begin with? Lose a high-profit base? Overbuild your income? Stuck with rotten efficency? You need to analyze the problem before coming up with the correct solution.

Well, I was playing as the Spartans. I hadn't radically overbuilt my bases AFAIK, mostly the bare bones like Recycling Tanks, Creches, and military complexes. My SE settings were pretty vanilla too, mostly early game settings like frontier politics, and simple economics. I didn't have any negative efficiency ratings, I think I was around 0 so it shouldn't have been that bad. I switched to Planned to help boost my industry, so that probably didn't help. After that it just went into a tailspin.

You got -2 Efficiency with the switch to Planned Economics.
A sizeable portion of your Energy production went swirling down the drain before you ever saw it.
Depending on how far you were into the game and the techs you had, there were several possible remedies:
Democratic Politics offsets this with +2 Efficiency (and boosts your Growth another +2 on top of the +2 from Planned Economics).
Knowledge Values offsets part of it with +1 Efficiency.
The only facilities that directly affect Efficiency are Headquarters and Children's Creches.
Otherwise you would have been able to stop or even reverse the flow with energy-boosting facilites and terraforming.
I am on a mission to see how much coffee it takes to actually achieve time travel.

Yeah. I think it was probably the -2 efficiency due to Planned that did it. I'll have to play the Spartans again without that penalty to see if it was that.
