I think that idea is very cool because that's precisely what a top-down social government would do: assign jobs for its citizens.

This is a good point but there is one extra that folks need be aware of. If you are a player who likes to skew your energy allocation heavy to lab or econ, the inefficiency hit you take still applies.

So for example a society running a paradigm efficiency can go 100% labs with no hit. While a -3 efficiency trying to go 100% labs will get soemthing like a 34% or greater hit to efficiency EVEN IF THEY COME FROM SPECIALISTS.

Running high inneficiency is fine and without issue if you are mostly specialists and are OK with energy allocations at or near 50% lab 50% econ.

Good point Ogie. Generally I have never had a high enough Efficiency rating as the Hive to warrant ever leaving the 50% mark for both Sci and Econ.

Usually this doesn not cause a problem as you manually adjust specialists from librarian or technologist (or thinker/engineer respectively) to achieve the same effect. But it is worth noting.

Early in the game i tend to go 80% lab/ 20% econ since for the sake of losing your 0-8ec income you can increase your tech rate rather significantly, i've went from 15 turns to tech every 8 turns, gets me running wealth then onto eco engineering alot quicker even if im alone. Once i start building the base facs i do switch back to 50/50 slowing down my tech rate by a few turns but increasing cash by about 50 per turn.
With the tight packing ICS strategy i play then i normally get alot of specialists without even trying, i dont normally switch workers away from my boreholes or forests since there will only be 4 squares max worked and the rest crawlered anyways. I tend to go for more thinkers aswell, cash isn't really needed as its flowing easy enough with all planetary energy grid and tree farms.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Me too Laz. I usually rely on scaring up some worms for the pearl energy to allow me the 40 ec's for the first SE change.
