I just started playing a game with a map of 255 by 255. It's 200 or 300 years into the game and I have had no troubles at all so far. I'm actually looking forward to having the time to get all the techs and upgrades for a change. Anyone else try stuff like this?

I've played several 1000 x 1000
90% waterworld can be quite lonely, especially if playing double blind, tech stag (I went over 200 years beforew meeting another faction, and almost that before getting flexibility - I was on a 20 x 20 tile island)
No problems with the game slowing, and when I
did get satellites, the AI had done a masterful job of seabase building.
Tried it on a 50% land map, and eventually gave up - it really bogged down between turns after 2300, as the AI made its moves.
Mostly now I play on 480 x 420, and have no problem with mostly land or mostly water.

For me, I like big maps, and a medium amount of land. For me, my fun always seems to reside in building not for war, but for my own faction. Granting, having someone to compete against is nice, but there is something about building up stuff just for yourself.

googlie:when i play on a larger-than "huge" board, all of the landforms go funny on me. continents get stringy, for lack of a better term, and even on 10% water, it still is about 50-50... that is when i'm home to play...
