  • POLL (Well Almost): Let's Give Our Scout Patrols A Real Name!

I just don't have the guts to hit "Submit New Thread" and then see that I didn't get it right. So this is gonna be an old fashioned kind of poll (untill I can get better at these things). You say which way you want to vote in a post below.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our poor little scout patrol troops have all the following duties/obligations/responsibilities...

    - Guard the base against anything that wants to walk/slither in.
    - Stand up to, and be destroyed before whatever up above does so.
    - They never retreat in combat.
    - Act as police units (Suppress drone riots.).
    - Expendable; I mean cannon fodder; I mean couragous; I mean brave troops that will venture into hazardous situations (like blocking Locust of Chiron flight paths.

I say they deserve better than the meager designation of "Scout Patrol".

These are Spartan men and women after all!

Let's give them a better name. One that is befitting the Spartan gendre.

Let's go back into history and use something that brings pride!

Let us call them "Spartan Spearmen".

(Or you can vote for something else.)

    Choices:

    A. Keep them as "Scout Patrols".

    B. Yes! "Spartan Spearmen" it is!

    C. I could care less.

    D. I want them to be called something else (you must specify in your post below).

Poll time out is somewhat limitless.
This is what it means to be a Spartan. It's not the killing or the suffering that matters. It's the purity of focus, without fear of death or pain.

( Someone always has to come along with a better idea, eh? )

        That sounds really good, Googlie.

But maybe we should save that name for better troops.
        Like 1-1t-1's.
1-1-1's are really kind of crappy.

Which brings up another thing I hadn't considered.
        What about 1-2-1's? 1-3-1's? 13-8p-1's?, etc.

(Maybe I should have spent another day trying to work on the poll... )

*Went for a cigarette to think about it*

Unless we call them; Trance Hoplites (Trancelites), Synthmetal Hoplites (Synthlites), Drop Hoplites (Droplites), Plasma Steel Hoplites (Plasma Steellites), (Shard 8-Pulselites), etc.

          Or something along those lines...

          Perhaps?

Well I think the concept of the Hoplite was the fast moving citizen-soldier able to live off the farmland he went thru or conquered.

Lightly armored and very mobile (in Civ II it's the special unit of the Greeks)

Once we add armor , or trance, we are getting more into the ranks of the professional soldier, so maybe a different nomenclature is needed.

In my own games I have the following:

a 1-3t-1 trance plasma unit is a HomeGuard
a 1-4tr-1 unit is a Palace Guard (even after NG when I add AAA or ECM, I just upgrade to the same name)
a 5-4trAAA-1*2 unit is my Praetorian Guard
            a 6-8trAAA -1*2 (or3) unit is my Presidential Guard

By the endgame I have 13-12trAAA-1*4 units that I simple call Elite Guard, whether they actually are elite or not

How about Phalanx? Then you could have a trance Phalanx, a SynthPhalanx, a PlasmaPhalanx, a Drop Shard X Phalanx, etc.

Do we want a name for each chassis or unit type? Right now, our foils are classified as SCC's, our probe foils are navy seals, etc.
Civ IV is digital crack. If you are a college student in the middle of the semester, don't touch it with a 10-foot pole. I'm serious.

well, technically we can't call the scouts anything else right now (basic units in the #UNITS section of alphax.txt can't be renamed)

But after we can armor, trance (or other special ability) them or give them better weapons we can name them anything

                  (slap head)

I forgot all about that. Same applies to formers, et al.

I see that my first attempt at a poll has turned out dismally...

(sorry people, I should have put more thought into it)

While we can't rename the scout patrols in-game, we can in the "base and unit inventory" rename "1st/2nd/3d... Infantry (brigade)" to "1st/2nd/3d... Hoplite".

I've not only read about Hoplites at the site Googlie posted, but also a whole bunch of other stuff about Sparta (Now I know why we have a base called "Gythium".).

                      I wanna change my vote!!

I now go for: D. Hoplites.
