Base spacing discussion (continued from offsite forum):

    Hydro:

    I suggest placing bases:

    * Two sectors apart (infantry can get to base in 1 turn for defensive purposes)
    * Place base next to pod, then pop pod to get better chance of a good result AND maybe get a facility completed for free! **In my last Hive PBEM I got 4 free RCs by doing this - it is HUGE**
    * Place bases on specials and rivers, where we can
    * More important to found a base than wait for terraforming or sensor due to the turn advantage (gets the pod off the support roles, adn gets it productive sooner)
    HongHu:

Agree with Hydro 100%, with one caveout. I normally don't place base on mineral or energy plus because if I can get WP I would be able to use those bonus squares to surpass resource restriction. Also I almost never build Rec commons.
    Net Warrior:

One thing I feel very strongly about is to go out of my way to place my "pre-1st-bdrone-limit" bases on rivers or energy bonus tiles. These bases will produce +1 or +2 EC's for 100-150 years and it's worth a little trouble up front to get them there. This ploy does wonders for speeding up early research too. I usually try to place all of my other bases on rivers or energy bonus tiles too but the 1st 6-7 bases are crucial. I believe that this is more important than any other spacing consideration.
    Hydro:

No RCs? How do you control drones after size 2? Keep in mind we probably won't get HGP or VW, and certainly not both. Moreover, RCs are MUCH cheaper for maintenance than holo generators
    HongHu:

I never do holo generators either.

For the first patch of bases (up to 9 for standard or large map I think) I do not let them grow to above 2 before I pump out a colony pod. So I expand fast. When a base reach size 2 I keep a police in base. Then around 2150 I think I get IA and I pump out a crawler in about every base. A couple turns later I grab the HGP or WP. Another 5 turns later I get VW. By this time you could do another wave of expansion, and for bases that grow over size 3 you turn them into doctors and most probably you are close to getting network nodes. Then you research Demo and build creches and pop boom to size 5. From there you use librains and do not need to worry for Drones.

In a pbem I'm in the Uni is still building lots of RCs and holo generators while I'm building the productive facilities and crawlers. It makes a large difference. I have a big tech lead compare to anybody. I can't other gift techs to others for nobody has anything that is worth of trading to me. (They do have techs I don't have, but I just don't want them.)
    HongHu:

Actually the turn 2150 for IA may not be accurate. I just checked the Hive record for this ACDG. We got IA in 2126. Of course trade is involved
    Darsnan:

I typically don't place my bases on specials, however Energy Specials are usually the exception. I do seek out rivers whenever I can when placing bases. I would say use Hydro's 2 square rule with the caveate of utilizing rivers whenever possible, and let us discuss Energy Specials in the context of the situations when they occur?
I also like to start laying bases on my perimeter with an interlocking defensive scheme in mind. Nothing that has to be discussed now, but please keep this in mind for discussion later.
    Chaos Theory:

Tight and flexible. If you can squeeze another base between existing ones, do so when it's convenient. If a base site is blocked, just take something nearby. Avoid founding bases on nutrient bonuses, but anything else is fair game.
    Net Warrior

What's wrong with base placement on nutrient bonus squares, especially early when you don't have or can't spare former time to imporve them?
    Chaos Theory:

Very early, it's fine to drop bases on nut bonuses, but after just a little while put forests on them instead, to leave open the future possibility of condensor-farming them.
