  • Quote from a soldiers' log...

As we approached we were confronted by the ruined splendor of
Enigma Machine. The true immensity of the place became instantly
apparent as our Commando Rover crunched over the rubble and parked
next to a shattered bunker, but the extent of the destruction
took weeks to assess. The shielded datacore had sustained several
massive breaches and smoke still billowed from the numerous data
nexii. There were few signs of human life.

Snoddasmannen looked out from the recon jet. He compared the scenery spreading out before him with the old intelligence photos he had used while planning the attack. He still could not believe it. The once sprawling city of Kahlua now lay in ruins beneath him. Once a proud prize in the tactical game he had been playing in his head for months, it had now been removed from the board.

He knew the mathematics of using military units to achieve military objectives, that was well known to Sparta. He also knew how enemy civilian casualties figured in to the equation. But this ... this ... was new to him. Never had he thought there could be a leader capable of such an act. This was beyond a tactical maneuvre, beyond a strategic decision, beyond the ravings of the most deranged psycopath locked up in the isolation unit at Fort Superiority.

Always, he had felt respect for his adversaries at war. They were warriors, they fought til the end and died with honor. So too had the Datatech troops who were defeated at Mart Pact, they were heroes. But for a faction who was capable of an act such as this, the genocide of almost half its population, he could no longer feel anything but resentment.

"Murderers", he muttered, and ordered the jet back to base.
