No, it's a probe team being sent "home" (not exactly home but kind of home) all of a sudden without notice (and without sense) when some circumstances come together.Comment

In one of my pbems I intercepted a probe foil and it gave me several options, one of the option is to send it home.Be good, and if at first you don't succeed, perhaps failure will be back in fashion soon. -- teh Spamski

So any military unit attacking a probe team has a choice? I'm pretty sure I have attacked a few AI probe teams before... Do you only have the choice if you are not at vendetta?Comment

Ah, that's it. Haven't yet encountered any (AI) probe team from a friendly AI and therefore don't know that option.

Here's the relevant section from the script.txt file
When you move a unit to the probe team you'll get that message with any probe teams you encounter, whether in Pact, Treaty, Truce or first meeting. But in Vendetta, you'll attack them.extracted from script.txt
