Introduction
The Alpha Centauri Democracy Game is based upon the computer game Alpha Centauri. It is often referred to by the abbreviation ACDG. This is the third ACDG, with ACDGII being completed in June 2004.

The participants of this game have formed on strong online community that is well versed in strategy and roleplay. This means a new member can choose to learn detailed strategies in the game Alpha Centauri, and having fun with roleplay that is composed of story writing, debating, and diplomatic intrigue.

How much participation, and what kind of participation you wish to have is your own choice. Some players will join up simply to talk with other members of the community. Other players may be interested in the diplomancy, strategy or roleplay aspects of the game.

There are 4 teams of humans that are playing in this game. If you are interested in this game you can talk in the public forum with members of all the teams. However, the major part of the action is hidden from public view as the teams maneuver to win the game. That means if you’re interested in seriously participating you’ll need to join a team.

If rather talk to other players to find out more about the game rather than reading this, come over to the Recuitment Thread and someone will be sure to help you.

The old introduction for ACDGII which has already been finished can be found here.

The computer game Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri is a turn based strategy game that has a loyal following of gamers due to its complexity. Unfortunately the same complexity prevented it from being accepted as a mainstream game. However, most of the people here are unfazed by that.

The game Alpha Centauri is set in a futuristic world where earth is dying. In a last ditch effort to save the human race the space ship Unity was built and sent to the nearby star Alpha Centauri. A couple of decades later, the colonists arrived and began their approach to a planet they named Chiron. However, things did not go to plan as space debris hit the ship forcing the colonists to crash land. This combined with an assassination of the captain, broke the chain of command and caused the survivors to break up into 7 separate factions with different ideologies.

The game begins as you crash land on the world. You need to built up your cities, and rediscover much of the technology that was lost in the crash. You also have to contend with the other 6 factions that are somewhere else on the planet. However, that's not all, as this brave new world is also an alien world. As you progress through the game you have to learn about and understand the alien planet you have landed on.

Usually one or two people from each faction are nominated to play the game turns. These people usually take the advice and directions of their team mates, then make the moves in the game before pass it on to the next team. Currently, the game is progresses at 1 turn every 5 days. At this rate it is expected the game will finish in a bit over a year.

Roleplaying
Roleplaying is about imagining yourself in an interesting situation or having a different persona. It's about acting out a character, and having fun while doing so.

In this case you're pretending to be someone in the futuristic world of Alpha Centauri. The type of roleplaying depends on the faction you decide to join. The different teams have come up with varying ideas on how to roleplay in their faction. So you should probably have a look at the individual descriptions of each faction.

There are many ways to roleplay in the ACDG. It is doubtful anyone will try and restrict you, but it's easier if you're with people that like to roleplay in the same ways. In the previous ACDG the favourite ways of roleplaying were in writing stories, writing newspaper articles, roleplaying your position in the government, writing diplomatic messages, and making jokes while acting out your character.

Here are some of the examples of roleplay in ACDGII.
The View from Above
The Planetary Archives
Interfaction Debating, Hive vs University & Drones - nervestapling is perfectly safe
Interfaction Debating, Cycon vs Pirates - cycon's parrots are better than pirate's parrots
Hiverian Planetary Council Motion: Call of Cease Fire
The Horror Returns....

Government & Diplomacy
The majority of factions are running a democracy for their government system. This means that many decisions are voted upon. Decisions have to be debated with arguments and reasoning before approval can be made for all major decisions. Inside each faction there is a government hierarchy, and work is distributed among the members according to their government position.

Diplomacy occurs within a team in convincing other team members of ideas and running for elections. External to the team there is inter-factional diplomacy. This involves mainly alliances and trading in the early stages of the game. Later when the global council is called it is expected that issues of global important will also be decided.

Strategy
The strategy is what attracts the majority of players to the ACDG. In ACDGII the amount of discussion on strategy and the game was staggering. The Strategy and Help forums on Alpha Centuari cannot compare to being able to sit down with other players and work on strategies in a practical situation. Many of these players have had significant experience with multiplayer and can be considered the some of the best players of Alpha Centuari around. Most of them are very happy to help out someone that is interested in learning more about how to play the game.

If you’re interested in taking a hands on approach to learning strategy, joining an ACDG team is perhaps the best way to do it. Many players in ACDGII started out knowing very little about how to play the game and have accumulated a wealth of knowledge during the course of the previous game.

Teams
The differences in the team aren't only in their roleplaying descriptions. They're also different in the way they are run, what they spend their time doing, and how they roleplay.

The teams have different governing systems and command structures. This is highlighted in the descriptions each team has provided. The priorities of each team also vary, with some giving high priority to the technical aspects of the game and others to roleplaying.

This can be divided even further. Certain teams will likely stress aggressive game play or prefer to build up their forces for the long run. In roleplay, certain factions may place high emphasis on roleplaying while making decisions. Other factions may prefer to use story writing or newspapers as the main outlet of their roleplay.

Which faction you choose should depend on what you are interested in. Once you have committed to a team you cannot change teams. This is to prevent secret information from being leaked into other factions. If you have joined a team and find you don't like it, your only opinions are to attempt and change way the team is being run or quit. Enforcing your will on all your team mates is going to be difficult so you should try and choose the team you want to join carefully.

Being Involved In The ACDG
People are involved in this game because it allows them to interact with other people. Some of the participants are here to learn the game from the experts that are playing. Others like to write articles or stories and show them to others in their team. Roleplaying with your team members can be something fun to do every now and again. Most often people come to this place just for an excuse to talk and share jokes.

Having others to play with is a major part of the ACDG and interacting with the others is what makes it fun. This is why we are always interested in new members.

It's not necessary to devote large amounts of time to the ACDG. Some members spent less than 1 hour a week making a few comments. If you are interested in more commitments then there are always jobs available. How much you want to get involved depends on what you decide.

Joining In
If you are interested in joining, you should first be fairly sure which team you will fit into best. One mistake people make is joining a team based on which faction they have enjoyed playing in the past. The differences between the teams are more than just what their faction can do.

You can only join one faction, and once you join that faction you will be unable to change to a different faction. This is because many of the game secrets are shared among team members, and allowing someone to change between factions may result in one team’s secrets being told to another team.

It is suggested you read each faction's description before making your decision.

Once you have chosen the faction of your choice you should look at the links at the top of the page. The links shown in the below picture allow you to join a faction, leave a faction and after you have joined the private forum link will appear there.

Remember that while you have the “Awaiting Authorization” message you won’t be able to see the private forum. When it shows the “Member” message then you will be able to click the Private Forum link and see the private forums.

These links will only be visible when you are in the ACDG forums.

To join, you click on the join link associated with your chosen faction then send a private message to the recuitment officer of the faction. Do not attempt to join multiple teams at the same time, as you will get rejected by all of them. This is so that game secrets won't get leaked out by someone that has access to multiple teams.

The factions and recuitment officers to private message are listed below.

Prologue

Dried twigs cracked underneath my boots as I made my way through the preserve. This was one of the few places that the mega cities hadn’t expanded into and compared to the noise of the city it was peaceful. I found it very beautiful and counted myself fortunate being one of the few that had a keycard to this place. The smog wasn’t quite as bad here, I supposed the trees filtered out a lot of the sulphur and carbon monoxide in the air.

Up ahead a small figure became visible in the reddish light of the afternoon. I knew I would find her here, she always said being in this place helped her think and she often had spoken of her childhood when she used to visit this place.

“Honghu”, I asked quietly, reluctant to disturb her. “The last transport is leaving for the Unity within the next 6 hours”.

Her back was still turned to me so I couldn’t see her face. For a long moment I listened to my own quiet breaths as I waited for her to reply.

“I will be there within 6 hours Kody.”

Her voice seemed distant and seemed far older than her actual age. Not scratchy like a crone’s rather timeless as the voice of the ocean that had been murmuring for millions of years. She was still facing away from me so I left without saying another word.

~~~~~~~
I heard his footsteps as he walked away and blinked away some more of my tears.
The red glow of the sun filtered through the smog and cast a soft red glow over the dying forest. There used to be birds here a long time ago, but they had most likely died from the bouts of acid rain that came from the factories further to the south. It was beautiful here, but it only served to remind me of what this place once was, when the sun used to cast a yellow glow that lit the dust motes and the trees were green and alive not brown and dying. I stood among ancient ruins still beautiful only because they whispered the grandeur of better days.
This world was dying and it felt like my heart was dying with it. The memories of my past were like this forest beautiful and treasured, but fading from this world nonetheless. It was so hard to break away from the past, to remember all the wonderful things and not look back with regret. Earth would always stay in my heart no matter how many light years separated me from it. This place held my roots nothing would change that.
I bent over and scooped a handful of dirt into the jar.
“And while your children will walk among the stars they will always remember you”, I said to the stillness of the forest.
As I walked back to the shuttle the long trunks of pines silently watched my departure. A honor guard that lined the way as walked towards a new world.
Creator Moderator and Narrator
CMN stands for Creator Moderator and Narrator. The CMNs are around to act as neutral assistants in the game, helping with disputes and assisting in keeping the game interesting.
There are five CMNs in this game.
Buster created the map and set up the game.
Drogue is the primary moderator and performs tasks such as moderating the forums and handling disputes over game rules.
Method is the secondary moderator and is Drogue’s deputy.
Kody is the main narrator. He helps to guide roleplay and chronicles the events during the game.
Honghu is the second narrator. She helps ensure that forums remain active, guiding and contributing writing to the roleplay.
Unfortunately new players cannot directly join the CMNs as that requires majority approval from the rest of the participants of the game.
Pholus Lunar Outpost
Start Journal Mission Year 2101.06.26.
This is communications officer Kody of the starship Unity. The Unity has been destroyed in the attempt to get to Chiron. The majority of escape pods have made it to the surface, but a portion of the bridge crew has crashed landed on one of Chiron’s moon Pholus.
Method the pilot of the escape pod claimed technical problems with the navigational jets, I actually put it down to ineptitude as I think in the heat of the moment he mistook the moon for the planet.
There were only about 20 survivors that made it to our escape pod. Captain Buster is with us, but I do not know if he will survive. He has been shot and there is nobody with us that has the required medical training to help him. Of the other surviving officers there is first officer Drogue, Method who handled navigation and Honghu the ship counsellor.
I have searched the communication frequencies and have located signals emanating from seven different landing areas. It’s comforting to know that there are more survivors although we cannot spare the energy yet to send a signal.
While we have all the resources to start a new colony, we have too few people to make it viable. It is my hope that sometime in the future the others on the planet will be able to send a rescue mission so we can rejoin humanity. In the meantime construction of a dome is underway as we know it will be many years before help will come.
Fortunately for us we have located frozen water deposits under the rock and have a nearly unlimited supply of oxygen and water. The colony pod’s hydroponics is supplying us with more than enough food, as it was meant to handle a few thousand rather than 20 people. The one thing we are short on is energy as many of our solar panels shattered in the crash.
End Journal.
Morgans Rule
If you want to own Planet, in all senses of the word, then the Morganites are for you. We are a vibrant faction of enthusiastic and skillful people. Everyone is learning so much from each other that our heads are about to burst! Don't you want your head to burst from too much knowledge? C'mon, you know you do!
Morgan Prospects
A Review of the Morgan Industries Starting Position
Many people have asked me the question: What's so great about Morgan Industries? Other than it's inherit superiority to all other factions in every way, Morgan Industries has a great starting position!
Why, when we landed, we were in shock: The land itself is fertile, bursting with life and energy! The rainfall bore down on everything, except that land which we built our glorious base upon.
The river that we are near is blessed with fish, and foul abounds in every direction! The rain strengthens the trees and plants which produce bountiful harvests of fruits and vegetables to nourish us! The pigs run around already pre-cooked, and farms appear every day in this fertile valley!
Near us is Mount Drogue, a mountain 1000000m high which produces great energy every year! Already there are solar collectors pre-terraformed to give us billions of energy credits per year! Why, our scientists are certain that we are recieving only a fraction of what we could get due to limitations in technology!
Also near us is an area full of mineral deposits! Natural boreholes exist as far as the eye can see, and minerals stretch on forever, providing Morgan Industries with the tools it needs to create a great empire of wealth and abundance!
The citizens of Morgan Industries live in a life of great luxury, especially when you compare them to the other factions of Planet. Who would want to choose Sparta, a desolate faction who regularly go without great meats and wine and insteaed drink water and eat bread?! Or the Data Angels, forced to type at their computers all day when we here in Morgan Industries are having great fun with our slavepersons. Or, worst of all, the Gaians: Who have shunned wealth, who have let their own people fall into appaling poverty, all in the name of "protecting Planet"?!
Confronted with all this, the question is not "What's so great about Morgan Industries", it's "What's NOT so great about Morgan Industries"? The answer, of course, is nothing!
Why choose poverty and oppression when you can have freedom and wealth?
Join Morgan Industries today!
What can you do for us?
Colonel's Log
2101
All went well at first, we'd made it to the escape pod, but the Colonel had been shot with a flechette pistol during the altercation on the bridge. We'd put her in one of the cryosleep chambers and lugged it into the escape pod, and we nursed her carefully as we plummeted towards the alien planet of Chiron.
The landing was harsh, and it took its toll on our beloved Colonel. Her vital signs were indicating deep trauma and severe shock, so after a brief discussion, Lt- Colonel Maniac - he'd been Corazon Santiago's aide de camp and right hand officer - took command and instructed us to put the Colonel in stasis and activate the cryosleep chamber until such time as we developed the technology to fully rejuvenate her.
GeneralTacticus (well, he was actually a Captain, but affected that title so we good-humerously let him have it) felt that it might be some years before she could resume her duties, so we mustered our courage and prepared to face a possibly hostile planet without her guidance and wisdom.
Our officer ranks include, in addition to Lt-Colonel Maniac and GeneralTacticus, and me, Major Googlie, the following:
Major Skanky Burns
Major Jamski
Captain Andemagne
Captain ChairmanSlick
Captain DeathByTheSword
Lt. Commander Dissident
Captain Kassiopeia
Captain Master Zen
Captain Ogie Oglethorpe
Captain Snoddasmannen
Captain Zeiter
Captain Zero
We are survivors, and we will survive.
In the words of our leader, taken from the Spartan Battle Manual
Superior training and superior weaponry have, when taken together, a geometric effect on overall military strength. Well-trained, well-equipped troops can stand up to many more times their lesser brethren than linear arithmetic would seem to indicate.
For we are Spartans
Colonel's Log
2111
Well, we have survived ten harsh years on this planet, without mishap. Our exploring has gone well, uncovering much fungus and some promising rivers, the longest of which we have aptly named Rio Grande
Our communications boffins some years ago intercepted transmissions that gave the co-ordinates for the Hive headquarters, so there is much speculation among the Junta command whether Sheng-Ji Yang will be friendly towards us or whether he will still harbor a grudge for our Colonel's deserting him during the Unity crisis. We shall see.
Opinion is divided among the Junta whether we should prepare for eventual war with yang, or whether we should try to court him as a valuable ally and confidante.
Meanwhile, is a tremendous burst of frenetic activity, the working drones - or helots as we refer to them - in Santiago Citadel, completed our second facility, a magnificent Command Center. All military training and wargaming preparedness was immediately moved to there, and it was put under the command of Major Jamski
Army Re-organization
With the opening of the new Training and Command center at Santiago Citadel, the Federation is adding to its armed forces at a significant rate. Consequently the Army has been re-organized along specialty and geographic lines.
• 1st Armored Division comprising the R-112 reconnaissance brigade and the Chiron Knights armored brigade
• 2nd Armored Division comprising the Rolling Thunder reconnaissance brigade and the Shinsengumi armored brigade
Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire
Concept
=Continuing on from the CIV series, one victory condition of which was to send a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri,
=7 factions have arrived on an alien world.
They must fight off each other, and planet itself, in order to secure their vision and future for humanity.
=The factions are divided by ideology, with each ideology having its affects, and the resulting factions are widely different.
Gameplay
=There are an infinite number of factions which can be played -
14 come with the original games, but more can be made.
Regardless of this, only up to 7 are in any game at a time.
=The ideological differences create differences in these factions, which make them play differently.
There is much information to be found on the web about how to play these factions - a good place to start is the
SMAC Academy
=Players often play multiplayer games, called 'Play by e-mail' or PBEM - such as this one, where 2 or more parties strive to 0wn the living crap out of one-another.
This is done on many fronts: Diplomatic, Strategic, Tactical and Psychological.
=Watch an Open Information PBEM To get the details on how some of these play.
=Multiplayer is generally a much better experience than Single player, because you actually have a hope of losing!
The Data Angels
=Ideologically, the Data Angels are represented by Sinder Roze.
Sinder is a computer hacker, part anarchist, who believes in free information flow.
=As Hackers are represented by the PROBE rating, the Angels get a mighty boost to +2 PROBE, with a free Covert Ops in each base once it becomes availabe.
=Also, the Data Angels gain any tech discovered by (at least) 3 factions with which they are infiltrated.
=Their Anarchistic tendencies lead them to have -1 POLICE, which makes drone control a bit harder.
=Their starting techs are Information Networks and Planetary Networks - tributes to their computer specialty.
Alpha Centauri Democracy Game
What it is
Unlike ordinary PBEMS,
The ACDG features decisions made by more than one person - often a team of 6 to 18 members.
There are private fora in which to discuss these options, so your secrets are kept safe.
A player may enter only one team - and cannot switch mid-game. This preserves team secrets.
It cannot be considered a true democracy, since different teams have different organisational structures.
The Angels are not a democracy, because 1% of the population will never be ignored - regardless of what the 99% say.
You may play for whatever reason you desire, with whatever faction will have you.
You also devote as much or as little time and energy as you want.
But as always, the more time and energy you put in, the more you will get out.
The Data Angels aim to have you use this energy both happily and productively.
Why Join? - The Game
The Game is Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.
The ACDG is a PBEM like any other - but is done on a massive scale.
You can play to learn, play to win, or play to kick some ass and show those Gaians, Morgans and Spartans other players who is the boss.
If you want to learn, we have Gameplay experts who can tell you how to play. Some with encouragement and showing you the way, others with discipline and criticism of your strategy.
Best, you can learn yourself as the game progresses and tactics unfold.
Keep your eyes open, and you can learn a great deal.
If you want to win, we are equipped with factions, all capable of winning. You can carry your skills in here and set them to work - most factions are glad to have another skilled player.
Why achieve against just one player, when you can take on the larger challenge of beating several at once?
Then there's the fun part - kicking serious ass.
Teammates at your side, faction under your influence - if your team is strong enough, Planet is yours for the taking.
The way to strengthen your team is to pour time and effort into it.
If you work hard enough, you get to prove your glory in knowing
that you did not kick one ass, you did not kick 3 asses,but you kicked upwards of 20 asses in one go. Marvellous.
Remember that there are 4 ways to play: Diplomatically, Strategically, Tactically and Psychologically.
The Data Angels support Learning, Achieving and 0wning with all 4 aspects of the game.
Why Join? - The People
Like it or not, you share this game with others.
Some like it a great deal - and make their point of playing this game interacting with others.
Far removed from the diplomatic wars that erupt, Socialising is a common and fun activity for most, if not all, of the players here.
Role-Playing is a common interaction. Players pretend to be a character in the game, and pretend to play that role.
Some RP in the past has involved prose fiction, recounts of past faction events, publishing newspaper articles and magazines,
and generally spamming for the glory of your faction.
Spam is another integral part of socialising.
Face it - the mods don't come here all that often, giving you a decent excuse to up your postcount.
There are numerous spam threads generated by people with similar interests.
Then, there is the normal interaction. Players tend to chat about anything and everything - so start a thread, drum up conversation, and see what you can enjoy about the people here.
Who knows - you make some new friends.
As usual, the Data Angels strive to make socialising a fun and rewarding experience, with many friendly players already inhabiting their ranks.
In the begining
As Deidre approached, she spoke worlds through commlink.
“Not for one man, one people, or one country, but for all of mankind.”
With this words she planted the flag in the ground. She remembered Captain Garland answering her question on which historic words shall be spoken in this occasion. There was a good chance that their pod was the only one to survive Planetfall. She thought about it for a moment and looked at the flag she has just planted in the ground.
Flag was stylised UN flag, chosen for this mission. Silence prevailed in circle of colonists surrounding her, as everyone watched at the symbol of unity, hope and survival, that wavered weakly on the wind of this alien world. This mission was perhaps the last hope of survival of humanity as a species, and yet it failed too. Humanity has carried strife among the stars.
There was some movement in the circle, as someone was apparently moving closer to the center. A colonist was carrying a new flag towards the center. Flag had green background, and a rectangular shape. As the colonist approached, the shape became clearer. It was a stylised symbol of a red roze, with a black outline, on a green background. Everyone asked themselves how could a new flag be completed so fast.
Colonist finally came to center. Deidre took the flag from his hands and repeated the words: “Not for one man, one people or one country, but for all of mankind and Gaia.”. Then she planted the newly assembled flag near the UN one. “We shall not allow tragedy of Earth repeat ever again.” Colonists watched for a moment, united in silence.
And that promise was not broken.
Objectives of Gaian Team
Our prime priority is to have fun. Our secondary priorities are: Winning the game in the way we choose to do so, and doing some excellent roleplay. We are look at this ACDG as way to explore new strategies, learn from others and increase our abilities. We also seek to get into role, using in character stories, newsletter(s), and all other forms of roleplay. We also look at this as a chance to teach other factions a bit about preserving environment.
Government
Gaian team is ruled in a democratic way. Lady Deidre is our supreme leader, but she has decided to abstain from day to day businesses, leaving Gaian Union to manage themselves. Several departments manage different aspects of the Gaian Union. Any willing member can easily join any of these. Each important matter is decided in polls in which majority of members has to express their opinion.
While Gaians actually lacks in ACDG experience compared to the other factions the members made up for this deficiency in other ways. Group of members has extensive PBEM experience. Large amounts of time are spent researching new ideas and precision in every single turn is paramount for success.
Consequently, a new member can contribute more as all ideas are considered important. Also a new member can learn more as when a new idea pans out it is explained in depth to the other members.
Roleplay
Gaians are a roleplaying faction. We do in character stories, participate in official roleplaying activities, make several newsletters, including Gaian Times and Voice of the Planet. Also
we maintain history of our faction, trying to write short stories for each event. Diplomacy is also roleplayed. It is important to mention that our roleplay does not strictly dictate gameplay. People are encouraged to participate, but not required to do so. Currently, most of members prefer roleplay more than gameplay.
Immigration
Why join? We are always looking for more members. If you like roleplay, we are definitely the right faction. If you wish to win, join us. If you are interested in gameplay, we have a core of experienced members, willing to cooperate. If you wish to learn, join and observe.
