  • Questions about religion in BNW.

So I noticed that this week steam is allowing people to try out BNW for free as long as they own Civ5 and the other expansion pack (which I do) so this is my first time trying out BNW. I notice everyone else keeps founding or enhancing their religion and I took ancestor worship and now have over 200 faith points but I have no idea what to do with them or how to turn my pantheon into an actual religion much less how to add extra stuff on to the religion. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Ahh, I figured it out. T found a religion you now need a great prophet instead of just getting a tech and by the time I got one all the religions had been taken. I played another game with the Celts and grabbed the first religion of the game. Honestly, the Celts seem over powered to me as I had two gems and a pearl near my capital along with lots of woods so the Celts wood bonus combined with the pearl and gems bonus for the path I took meant I was getting crazy amounts of worship especially after I rushed (went to first) shrines and later temples.

The Celts have a starting bonus for terrain that takes advantage of the Unique Ability, but yes they are one of the better civs for snagging an early religion.

Some other good civs for getting religions are:
Ethiopia -- Absolutely the fastest for getting a religion, their unique building the Stele (replaces monument) is available at turn 1 and produces 2 faith per turn.
Maya -- Also a very good civ for religion, their unique building the Pyramid (replaces shrine) produces 2 faith instead of the shrines' default 1 faith.
Shoshone -- New civ in BNW, their explorer replacement, Pathfinders, can choose the benefit of an ancient ruin, including the faith bonus (there is a certain cooldown, the faith option does not become available before roughly turn 20, depending on game speed)
Spain -- very situational, but if you start near any of the natural wonders that produce faith, you're set for life in that department!

To clarify the faith mechanic further, to found a pantheon you need to reach a set amount of faith. But this amount increases every time another civilization founds a pantheon.
To promote your pantheon to religion you need a great prophet, as you noted. To get a prophet (other than via social policies, Mayan calendar or the Hagia Sophia), you need to hoard faith. In the faith screen you can see the minimum amount of faith required to spawn a prophet. The problem is that once you are over this limit you have a chance to spawn one (fairly good chance, but it can still take a few turns). When the prophet spawns, your faith is reset.
