I have recently encountered an odd situation. When I am awarded a free Great Person of my choice (such as by completing the Liberty social branch or the Hagia Sophia wonder), when I get to the point where the announcement says "choose Great Person", I click on it but do not get a menu to select my awarded Great Person. Since the announcement will not go away until I have selected a Great Person, and since I am not being allowed to do so, gameplay grinds to a stop. Does anybody here have any clue on what might be happening and what I can do about it short of reinstalling the game?

I've never seen this. The get a great person of your choice thing always worked perfectly for me. BTW anyone who takes anything other than a great engineer is dumb.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

I just bought this game last week and ran into the same problem. I can select the great person, but it looks like the screen is cut off where I can select OK. I tried adjusting the video settings, but there are not taking. I have no mods. I am stuck now as I cant go forward until the great person is selected.

Not completely agree
Great General : Useless, get plenty of those
Great Merchant : Useless too.
However the other three do have use :
Great Artist : I NEVER get enough of those, the ability to snatch a few tiles (usually 3) from your neighbour is often more valueble than you think.
Great Engineer : A few extra production in a city (3 more compared to a mine, 8 more with the right social policy, plus production bonusses) is nice. the ability to rush a wonder a nice backup option, it is good but sometimes I prefere the artist.
Great Scientist : The ability to instantly get a tech may be often useless in later game (when you have so much science you get one every 3 turn) but in early game it can give a great advantage, giving you acces to units, or buildings early further speeding your early advance. If you play for science victory this one too is a great help.
So while I agree Great Engineer is good, when given the chooice I often pick artist, since they seem to be more scarse when I need them.

It might be fun to those who only build rushed wonders, but I tend to SPECIALISE my capitol for wonder production.
meaning I pick the social policy's increasing production, place a lot of mines near my capitol (to boost production) use my gold to buy waterwheel/windmill/workshop/factory/powerplant to have that production boost direct and not have to waste turns on building buildings there...
This lead me to having a 100+ production city early rising to 200+ and beyond..
more tha enough production to outproduce my rivals on any wonder.
with this tactic, having 5 production on a tile rather than 2 from a mine means a lot.
for starters with Freedom that 5 becomes 10, giving a difference of 8
Furthermore, if one is egypt has marble in that city, and has the right social polic's that adds 130%, making that +8 a whopping +18.4 production.
rushing gives about 1000 production.
1000/18.4 = 55 turns.
In 55 turns (or the time of just 1 wonder) I get that same effect.
I prefer a 18.4 production/turn forever boost due a production tile improvement over a one time only 1000 production boost anytime.
The reason I called them backups, it CAN happen sometimes on a map with lots of rivals you just missed one wonder.
that is where the backup comes in, than you do load you last savegame (go back 5 turns) and rush yours.
however I see that as a absolute last resort option, due I find that 18.4/turn bonus to important to just waste it.

So the great Artist lost a lot of its appeal and the general became more useful
