  • Speed Issue with new patch

I've played 1.5 games with the new patch. I play random everything and go down the map types. First game was a duel(Terra) and they boxed me into not being able to expand, so I just created a bunch of slingers and wiped him out. Got the one city acheivement in the process. However, my problem was the second game. Huge Tiny Continents map. I'm 515 turns into the game and the gameplay has slowed down to less than a snails pace for example, from 515 to turn 530 it took Over an hour with no war on my part. Going for the culture win and just letting it run until I need to tell it to build a new building or worker improvement. So basically 5 minutes a turn. Is anyone else having this problem or is just a combination of map type and size that is basically unplayable?

The speed is so brutal later in the game on even a Large map on my Core i7 870 that I got impatient and just quit. Brutal.

Why does anyone play this game still? I thought we established at launch that it's terrible...

Speak for yourself... as you usually do...
The game is much improved since it's initial launch. Personally, I'm still playing Civ IV MP... but I still have hope that the game will continue to improve.
        Keep on Civin'

I agree, the patches really helped to improve gameplay and balance.

The only thing I miss is Destroyers having extra sight. They should at least give this ability to the Carrier.

I find the speed to be okay, been playing two standard size maps on standard speed lately, one on my own Core 2 Quad machine, one on a friend's Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. Both went fast and smooth.

TBH I've not noted a significant slowdown and I'm playing (marathon, standard or large maps) on a clapped out dual-core thing. Strange.

The last patch has improved the game out of all recognition IMO. I thought it was completely hopeless and suddenly from nowhere it's Civ again.

I'm having the same speed issue with a standard size map, and I know I didn't have speed issues prior to the patch. Sure, they fixed a lot of the gameplay, but if it takes so long to play that you quit, the improved gameplay is not really an improvement.

I think this is an issue you alone have, I have seen no other reports of it and have not experienced it myself. Have you tried a renstall?

Nikolai, Asher in this thread and Dr. Strangelove in the Hotfix thread are two that have complained about the speed. However, I'm just reporting my experiences, not trying to start a flame war.

Flame war? No need for that! I'm just pointing out that it is a rare occurence, so it might be some kind of borked install.

The issue is 100% of the time in MP for me. I don't see it in SP.

Nikolai, I give the speed is too brutal for me. How can I do a reinstall without downloading the whole thing over again?

Well, if you bought it online, you'll need to do it all over again, if you have a DVD I think you only need to download the patch. You could try to validate your files, but I don't think that is the problem here. Doesn't hurt to try though. Right click on the game inside steam, choose proerties, go to local files and verify the integrity of the game cache. There you also have the option to defragment the cache files. I've never done that so I don't know if it will help, but defragmenting Windows often helps with speed, so...

I had already tried to validate, no help. It seems like a large pain to fix a series of small pains. I wonder if it is worth it? It takes me literally 1-2 minutes from the time I press next turn to when I get control again(On Huge maps). How fast is it for others. I'm not going to download again if it is just a matter of my patience level.
