  • Sticky on Steam?

Could some kind contributor write a simple guide to going offline on Steam? I can't find the offline box to tick anywhere. Then make it a sticky - and no, I don't want to start a debate about steam - that is going very well elsewhere. I just don't want to depend on the Internet to play the game.

And while I am about it how do you skip the video? Quite impressive the first time, but now I really would like to skip it.

    Thanks in advance |

If I have my D-Link wifi dongle detached, Steam will give a message after the computer starts up asking to retry the connection or stay offline. Then when I start civ5, it will ask again (first thing, before civ actually starts to come up) if offline play is desired.

Skip the civ5 intro video on startup in the Hints & Tips section.

Open Steam. On the menu bar click on "Steam", then "Settings." Select the "Interface" tab. Clear the check box for "Run Steam when my computer starts."

Now Steam will not run every time you start your computer. You can use the internet, etc. but Steam will not run unless you start a Steam game or the Steam ap.

To stay off Steam's servers when you want to play Civ 5, disable your network connections before starting Civ 5, or unplug the network cable, or turn off the wireless switch on your lap top, or unscrew the wireless antenna(e) from your desktop computer, or do a combination of these things to ensure your system is not capable of connecting to Steam's servers when you start a game associated with Steam.

Note, once you start the Steam game Steam will stay running after you exit the game. To close Steam before you connect to the network either restart your computer, or start the Task Manager and shut down the steam.exe *32 process.

You can always use the "Steam" menu...

Open Steam, click the "Steam" menu at the top left, choose "Go offline..."

It was pretty funny, but hilariously inefficient.
