Although, to be honest, if I have 5 spare happiness (or 6 maybe at King difficulty) I'll probably just switch them over right away so I can micromanage their production.
I was referring to things like mines, etc. so they wouldn't be quick to produce that building you don't want. I haven't really tried it, but I THINK you can pillage your own improvements ... if not then just build something else on top of it.

I LIKE golden ages, and for that I like to do whatever I can to max my happiness surplus to have more full-length ones. Probably just my problem. At this time (mid 19th century) in my game, my trade routes are just about covering my troop expenses as I prepare my invasion.

I'm not in the lead either (and I'm playing WARLORD difficulty) . Japan just finished off America and now he's got virtually the whole other continent.

EDIT: Didn't get gold for pillaging in your own borders in IV, either. You may not WANT to limit their population too much, since that's still YOUR research ... IF you have enough surplus happiness to get that courthouse built when you decide to tell them who's boss.

I do not know, in industrial age, on warlord difficulty (one below prince), I have about 80G per turn, and it continue to grow with time. With gold age, this number goes above 100.

I have 6 of my cities, one occupied (so effectively 7 cities under my control), and 4 puppet cities. (And I had just one war)
My score is twice higher than the best of AI, I have 4 allied city states (out of 8) and the game is so easy that I considering not finishing it and restarting at harder difficulty level.
And, I am playing Babylonians, that do not have any unique ability helping economy, quite the contrary, when you use your scientists to construct academy, you can not construct other resources on the same tile.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so
certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

Good news. Yes, for now, just adjust the setup in order to force some of the challenge that will definitely come at the lower levels as the game improves. It's been fun watching you learn so quickly.
