I used to prefer DVD/CDs but as I buy new desktops and laptops I had problems finding my old civII discs but having bought IV on Direct2Drive, it was so easy to just redownload them that it's how I will purchase all future games. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. That's the other nice thing about Steam...can download the games anywhere.
When I was back home for vacation I got the urge to play Team Fortress 2. So I loaded up Steam and told it to install. Voila.
If I had it on disc only, it'd be stuck at home..."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The fact that you bought the game would allow you to argue 'fair use' if you were sued by the game owners for breaking the EULA. AFAIK, most questions as to what is and isnt 'fair use' of software has never made it into the american courts since the various software companies that whine about 'piracy' (ie no cd patches etc) avoid the issue like the plague since they are almost certain to lose.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt's not, under fair use laws in the US. Besides, I actually bought the game, unlike your C++ books.
One interesting aspect of the Steam registration that has not been mentioned in this regard (ie fair use) is that you will not be able to sell your legitimately purchased copy of the game under any circumstances (unless you also give out along your Steam login). I've never sold a game but its great to know that I'm not allowed to do so.We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Yes it is, under the DMCA. It's just as illegal as backing up your DVDs by ripping them.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt's not, under fair use laws in the US. Besides, I actually bought the game, unlike your C++ books.

They don't sue you for violating the EULA. It's illegal because circumventing digital copy protections (CD check in this case) is illegal due to the DMCA.Originally posted by SpencerH View PostThe fact that you bought the game would allow you to argue 'fair use' if you were sued by the game owners for breaking the EULA. I've never sold any but if I could have got some of my money back for M2TW I would have. If I buy CIV5 and it's a POS, I have no way to recoup my losses. That seems absurd.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View Postwhy would I bother to sell a game?
