  • I am from Greece and to buy the game on steam it will cost 50 euro. To buy from Amazon.co.uk it costs 25 pounds + shipping which comes to around 38 euro (Kind of a paradox to get retail version much cheaper than download).....I don't want to pay the extra 12 euro if it makes no difference...

Will I have any problems playing online with the retail version?

    • I still dislike steam even if it is not for a rational reason. I can dislike what ever I want mother ****ers.

Don't buy any game on steam if you live in the Euro Zone. The reason is they have a bug in their software which makes one euro equal to one dollar because when they introduced sales in euros it was equal to the dollar but now the euro is worth more then the dollar so you end up getting screwed. Buy from a different online retailer or buy from a local retailer.

        • I have preordered from Amazon UK as well,
after all I read you only get problems with steam
if you buy versions of their games from asia or russia
(obviously steams strategy to prevent cheap imports from these countries).

As for 1$=1€ ... well, I have my doubt that it can be considered as a bug...
rather intentional behavior by steam to get more money from european players

STFU! We all know the moon landings were faked. :amd:

I find it hard to believe they wouldn't go to great efforts to fix it, as it would seem to put them at a huge market disadvantage, unless it was intentional.

That's not a bug, it's just a business decision. You can blame the publishers for that, as they set the price, not Steam.

That wasn't what he was asking, he was asking if he'd have problems playing the retail version from Amazon UK instead of one downloaded directly from Steam.

Indiansmoke - you shouldn't have a problem, no. Steam treats games you buy in the box the same as games you buy and download directly from them. If buying it retail saves you money, go for it.

                    That's not a bug, that's a "feature"!

It's not just Steam, even consumer electronics are often sold using this exchange rate. However, I've just bought CivV for $$$ on Steam.
Buying StarCraft was most funny. English (UK)? That's 60 Euro, please. English (US)? Just 60 bucks. You can choose any one you want. I guess Euro servers will be underused.

                      • I've used Steam and I've never had a problem with it (though to be frank, I've only ever used it for two games.)

Here's a question for everybody saying "I don't like Steam knowing what games I'm playing and for how long"- do you have an X-Box Live account on a 360 or a PSN account on a PS3? Because I'm pretty certain very similar things happen on those (though I'm only certain about the 360).

Steam has achievement systems (frankly, something I could live without), in-board chat with friends who may be playing different games, an in-board internet browser (no alt-tabbing, which I've found a great many games don't get along with that well).

In addition, you can install the game as many places as you want (but can only play it one place at a time, naturally), runs multiplayer through itself (no shoddy half-baked in-line multiplayer), inboard voice chat, and nearly everything you could want.

Naturally, the risk of "what if Steam goes down?" is always a risk when using ANY product online, but Valve has shown to be pretty reliable in the past and I can trust that if that comes to pass they'll handle it properly. Besides, right now Steam is being loaded on by nearly every major developer/publisher, Valve is swimming in cash, and in all likelihood, something as lucrative as Steam will be bought rather than allowed to go under.

Besides, apart from just your standard disc-check, Steam is one of the most unobtrusive DRM schemes available (and one of the ones that add to the experience). Remember, devs answer to investors, who want some indication that something more reliable than a simple disc-check is being used to stop piracy. Would you rather they go the Ubisoft route and say "always on internet connection" or the SecuROM route and mutilate your computer?

No, just a regular gamer. And yes, I'm fully aware that Steam has it's downsides- I for one, don't like the idea of being forced to install something either- but the benefits of Steam, to developers and to players, usually far outweigh the negatives. (ironically enough, the only problem I've had with a Steam game was Empire: Total War, and to be frank, all those were Creative Assembly's fault for releasing a shoddy, unfinished game)

Yes, Steam will probably have some major issues down the road, but I trust Valve to get that fixed and I won't miss out on a really, really good game just because it has some drawbacks to the service.

When Steam finally does break, I will be raging, but that's then, and this is now, and I'm not sacrificing anything just because something MIGHT happen.

                            • Steam also sells stuff to me, unlike D2D, which won't sell anything to anyone other than Americans or subjects of the Crown.
