  • Civilopedia changes and new units!

2K publishes titles in today's most popular gaming genres, including shooters, action, role-playing, strategy, sports, casual, and family entertainment.

Yesterday we revealed the awesome Giant Death Robot but I have some extra good news, Civfans! There are some other great units being introduced into the Civilization series for the first time in Civilization V.

As before, I'll let the Civilopedia do the talking. But first, speaking of the Civilopedia, there's been some awesome changes in store for the treasured resource that has been a hallmark of the series for nearly two decades. The Civilopedia will now feature full voice using sophisticated Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology! So you'll never have to read a line again! Imagine hearing the description for Astronomy or Physics from a voice that sounds just like Stephen Hawking! Just open up the Civilopedia and it'll do the talking! The Civilopedia is bad ass, right, Civilization V fans?

But, as I was saying, back to the new great units. I'll let the Civilopedia do the talking (literally):

    Steam-punk Battle Armor:
It's the late 19th century and the greatest minds have combined to meld the awesome power of steam with the strength of steel to allow your solders to encapsulate themselves in Steam-punk Battle Armor! Sounds awesome right? Get this: Nicholas Tesla must have worked on the design because the Steam-punk Battle Armor comes with two (yes, two!) Tesla coils so you can fry all those enemy riflemen (literally)!

    Combat Strength: 75
    Movement: 3
    Required Resource: Coal
    Required Tech: Steam-power, Industrialization
    Penalty Attacking Cities
*this unit only available if you pre-order from Steam

    Bull Mastiff:
Tired of those pesky barbarians at the gates? Have they stolen gold and stopped production in one of your cities? We have the perfect solution to that problem! Trained from puppies, Bull Mastiffs were used effectively by the ancient Romans as guard dogs. So too can they guard the entrances to your cities. But beware, if friendly units are not around, the dogs can go feral and you'll need to re-tame them! They are also susceptible to rabies which can result in an outbreak in one of your cities.

    Combat Strength: 15
    Movement: 2
    Required Tech: Domestication
Combat strength reduces to 0 if no friendly units nearby
*this unit only available if you pre-order from Direct2Drive

    Prostitute:
The ultimate weapon in alternative warfare, the Prostitute is sure to be a Civilization V fan favorite! When in the presence of friendly units, the Prostitute provides a boost to combat strength but drains movement points so use these units to heal units before sending them into battle! But that is not all, Civfans! The dynamic Prostitute can be used offensively as well! Sending it to 'attack' enemy units makes them unable to move for one turn! Also, each Prostitute in your territory provides 1% additional population growth empire-wide. Note, researching the tech Contraception reduces the effect of this population bonus by 50% but increases Prostitute movement by 2.

    Movement: 2 (4 with Contraception)
    Required Tech: Sexual Reproduction
*this unit only available if you pre-order from GameStop

I bet you can't wait to try out these units in Civilization V provided you pre-ordered from each of our preferred sellers! Hell, buy them all! I know I will!

I know this update is getting long but I have another great feature I can't wait to share with Civilization V fans! There is an awesome new technology called Alchemy, making its debut in Civilization V! With Alchemy, you can convert any resource into gold (see my previous updates on the awesome six resources and what they mean for Civilization V fans)! Isn't that awesome? And plus, with a new Alchemist citizen, you can convert any resource into any other resource! Don't have uranium but want to build nukes? Convert trees into uranium and nuke away!

Yeah. I thought you might like that.

I have some other great new game concepts introduced to the Civilization series for the first time in Civilization V! Be sure to tune in tomorrow to check them out! Same Civilization V place, same Civilization V time. Later, Civilization V fans!

After GDR, I wouldn't put it totally past them. A worthy effort, Al.

I actually thought this was pretty funny, although it really shouldn't be. It's like that one holocaust joke.

Bull Mastiff: No, the dogs FAILED to alert the Romans to the celtic attack, so their social status degraded. It was the GEESE who alerted the guards, so they became honored.

Prostitutes: Otherwise known as those Sabine Women (though they were kidnapped).
Turned out very effective in the long term ... well, several hundred years, anyway.

Will there be any issues with the above units when players who purchase the game through different vendors play together in PBEM, or any other multiplayer mode?

Okay umm... I can't tell if you're playing along or being serious so just in case you end up getting puzzled when the Civilopedia isn't talking to you...

It was a joke. It was in reference to the stupid units, pre-order-only units and civs, bizarre changes to make the game easier, and that Greg guy's annoying "Yeah. It's that awesome. You're in for a treat, Civilization V fans!" crap.
