I'm puzzled by the assertion that what made Civ3 bad was not its basic unplayability as a game, but the leader animations. Kind of like saying the Titanic cruise would have gone fine if the douchebag captain hadn't been hitting on your wife the whole time...

The "cartoonish" style and attitude was a strong point for Civ4 IMO. It dodged the problem a lot of games have when trying to look realistic but usually failing by making caricatures of the leaders both in appearance and in how they acted. It also served as a good visual cue for what kind of personality each leader had traditionally. Genghis was obviously aggressive by his actions, whereas Gandhi came across as very calm and accommodating.

I actually worry a little about the more real leader portraits of Civ5 seeming too stiff and having less personality to them.

            Intresting discussion this is,

It's a bit like the Civ2 home castle. It's something that is not of any importand. Some liked it some don't. Same goes with the video-govt. You like it or not.. but it does nothing with the gameplay itself. What does it matter if you see "Furious" next to Khan or you actual see him to be furious? I don't think that civ 5 is Civ REV2.. I played civ rev on my xbox360 and hate it. That game was for beginners. perhaps some play now real civ games after they begin with civ rev? Anyway back to topic. Civ 5 is for sure a dept game! With new things to be add. It's a different civ game. if you don't like the game you just keep playing civ4 (with some nice mods perhaps). Most of us shall love civ5 I think and they did not love or hate the game because of the animation of leaders. They love or hate it because of the gameplay!

Most of my oponent leaders are furious anyway

Funny I think completely the opposite. From esthetically and realistically hexes are horrible. Look at the hex map from civ V, and look at the map of the US. Do you see hexes on US map? Neither do I. The borders become ugly with hex and very unnatural.

What hexes are trying to do is improving gameplay. But not the looks.

Zoomed in I think hexes look great, the coastline looks significantly better than civ 4 going by the screenshots. What looks a lot worse is when you zoom out.

The coastline looks better not because of the hexes, but because how the coastline is drawn. The algorithm that converts the map into 3D view of the world is better in Civ V. This has nothing to do with hexes.

I also liked the BTS expansion mainly because it added in CTP2 stuff.

The leader heads of CIV was a HUGE win. I also play paradox games, they are outstanding games, but the other factions have no charachter. In civ each faction just oozes charachter, from the leader heads to the way they play the game the ai's are what make me keep comin back.

My biggest pet peave is the use of Live actors in computer games. I absolutely hate having to watch a bad actor do something over the top (with the exception of drunk military advisor). CIV was perfect on that front. I often demand things from cathrine just so she will smack me again.

Heh... the main reason I hate Gilgamesh is that he grabs you by the throat each time he disagrees with you. I'm sitting here thinking, "Just who the hell do you think you are?"

Al B sure, thanks for bringing up that video. Brings back good memories and its the perfect argument to people who try to pretend Civ started out as some ultra-serious reality simulator.

Civ1 was more serious then Civ2 though Civ2 was pretty much the same except with a couple of videos added in which got turned off after you'd seen them a few times.
