Civilization V and Deluxe Edition available on Steam in September
I like steam.
Steam keeps everything up to date, you don't need to worry about media loss, there are no dll's to worry about. You don't need to no-cd hack. You can still play offline.
Yep - there is something nice about getting a nice chunky box, but I think its outweighed by the advantages of Steam.
Besides, I used to have to get the deluxe version sent to a friend in the states to on-ship to me in NZ. Nightmare.
Let the flames begin!
I've had limited experience with Steam to date, and none of it was good. On the other hand, I've had tons of experience with D2D, and it has all been great. They understand the concept of customer service, while Steam doesn't. I love being able to download the game, no hack, and I have no need for a box... but I do want customer service. When I buy something from a company, I want it to support the product, since I am the customer.
I don't think that this news means that there's no physical release of Civ 5.
Of course Steam writes the press release a bit as if there's no other release, but it never states it explicitly. I'm absolutely positive that it won't be a steam release only.
The mesopotamia pack may be a steam only though.

I'm sure it won't be a Steam release only but like Half Life 2 and Modern Warfare 2 even the disc versions will run through steam which I don't mind personally having never had a problem with the service.
Krill-i play pbm Civ IV in multiplayer, ive steam version and others have box version. Come patch time it dose impose everyone updating becuase my civ will auto update. a hitch, but not game breaking.
personally i will have faith that the developers have looked at this area (patches have broke multiplayer games for me before, and thats before i had steam version) and wont make the mistakes from previous incarnations.
but all in all, my steam experiances has been nothing but good.

Totally agreed. I live in Brazil, Rio... Great place to live , but you can't find all the expansion packs here.
I have Civ IV (and the expansion packs) in my Steam acount, by the way... Playing without any trouble or issue since the release date...
Excuse me for asking, but how does the Steam work? Do you download the game to your computer? Do you have to be online to start it every time?
You have an account, in fact, more than a game. You need to install the Steam client first, then download the game using the Steam client. You start the game from inside your Steam client. And you don't have to be online to play the game. There's an option to run Steam offline. But you need to be online eventually, to upgrade the damn client. No more than that. You're allowed to download the game in every computer you are using at the moment, in the same way.
I can play my games (I have three at steam) here at my studio or at home, or using my notebook, if I'm travelling, or at my friend's place, and so on...

1) I know the devs, and they are decent, but they aren't that good.
2) It's broken if someone else can play the game with extra DLC that you can't use. The game isn't balanced.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

It's possible to disable the auto-update feature of Steam - right click on the game, choose Properties, go to the updates tab, and switch the option to Do Not Update This Game. Good luck getting everyone in your game to not update, though. Might work if it's all people you know fairly well.
Honestly, all this MP speculation is falling into the trap of forcing the new version into the mold of the current version.
The real answer to the problem is that these are known issues; the designers of Civ V should design a game that is not subject to these kind of problems and resolves them in a more elegant and non-intrusive way.
The in-game update of IV was flaky and didn't work most of the time. It also was hidden... you didn't know if there was an update unless you went to look (or you saw news on one of the fan sites). And, I suspect that users got an OOS error *anytime* there was a version difference, when in reality it wouldn't have been a problem to let them just play.
Worst case they have to program in some logic for how the game plays out if users have different versions.
This is Software Programming 101. (All right, 201.)
Error codes that prohibit the program from working or CTD = bad design.
Elegant, non-intrusive function = good design.
